Letter to the Editor
Sales tax will not protect pocketbook
To the Editor:
So. you, too, received a letter
from A. A. R. P’s Ralph Lidman
confessing that he has seen the
light and now favors a sales tax.
The only problem is that he is
looking through dirty lenses and
can’t read the words. Get a copy
of the proposed constitutional
language and read it yourself.
Read what you will be voting on.
The money is not dedicated to
schools. It is dedicated to “ public
education’’. It was worded that
way on purpose so that the
legislature can define public
education to include education
programs that do not occur as a
part of the school system. Yes,
HB 2500 (which you don’t vote
on) says the money is for schools,
but that is a law that any future
legislature can change without
your vote.
Mr. Lidman says, “ The ex
emptions can’t be taken away.”
Wrong. Read the constitutional
language. It says, “ The follow
ing are exempt.. .all to the extent
described by law.” Who writes
In the Service
the law? The legislature. For in
stance, any future legislature
could say that food for home con
sumption does not include fresh
produce, or that motor vehicle
fuel does not include fuel for cars
and just like magic, the exemp
tion is gone and the item is tax
able. With the language quoted
above, any time that the govern
ment wants more money it can
just change the law.
We do not need a sales tax to
fund schools. The legislature just
needs to fund schools with the
first appropriation from the state
budget and then run government
on what is left. If there is not
enough money left, let’s see them
sell you a sales tax to run govern
ment. It couldn’t be done. The
sales tax pushers are just using
our concern for our children and
grandchildren to convince us that
a sales tax is needed.
Vote no on the sales tax, it does
not protect your pocketbook.
Sincerely,
(s) Douglas H. Breese, President
