To the Editor:
Isn’t it time we Oregonians
pulled out the flat-tax from the
depths of “ patron politics’’ and

reform? Too long have we left the
mechanism of the necessary evil
of financing our government to
the selfish whims of special-
interest groups who control the
very people elected to oversee the
system.
The flat-tax is based upon the
principal that we would all pay
according to our ability to earn in
come. Is there one among us who
would not be willing to pay a
percentage of our income, if we
knew the system was fairly
administered?
1 see no reason why each per
son. corporate body (foreign or
domestic) or any other income
earning business should object to
a definite and fixed tax-rate in
order to do business. It would en
courage all wage earners to truly
seek “ free enterprise” .
If we were to set an example
in the state of Oregon, to fix such
a rate, I believe the rest of the
country would follow suit. The
inherent greed accompanying
such an effort would be quick to
try to allow loop-holes in which
to avoid the basic premise;
therefore, a strict adherance to
policy would be the first and
foremost hurdle.
It is the opinion of many
analyists knowledgeable in such
matters, that our economy would
flourish given a federal tax rate
of eight percent of the GNP.
Could not the state of Oregon
operate on another two percent of
the gross income of our people?
If we were all to pay 10 percent
o f our gross income (no
exclusions-not even the student
who makes $1,000 in a summer),
would it not be a simple matter
to understand and implement the
liability we share as tax-payers?
Is it not time for Oregonians to
make such a move before the
career politicians shove “ Slick
W illy's” value-added tax down
our collective throats?
I will never, I repeat never,
vote for a sales tax, whether its
