Eva Padberg Griffith was rodeo queen in 1923. She, along with 41 other past queens, will
be honored during this year's parade.
Past Morrow County Fair and
Rodeo queens will hold a special
place of honor in this year’s
parade set for this Saturday, Aug.
21 beginning at 10 a.m.
Queens only will be invited to
'participate. Unfortunately, past
queens’ courts will not be able to
ride along, because of a lack of
space, said an organizer. The
queens will not be wearing their
rodeo outfits, but will be wear
ing old cowboy hats.
Forty-one out of 54 living
queens will ride in the parade, in
cluding the 1923 rodeo queen Eva
Padberg Griffith. There was no
fair that year. This was the se
cond rodeo held.
Eva, the daughter of William
Henry and Mary Padberg, grew
up on her folks' place in Clark’s
Canyon. In the 1923 rodeo at the
age of 14, she rode with her
princess Jane Allstott. Eva was
grand marshal for the 1975 fair
and rodeo and has ridden in
several parades over the years.
Eva has seven children, 23
gran d ch ild ren ,

grandchildren and one great,
great-grandchild.
1992 world champs to compete at rodeo
World champions Joe Beaver
of Huntsville, Texas, and Char-
mayne James-Rodman, of Galt,
CA., are scheduled to compete at
this year’s Oregon Trail Pro
Rodeo.
Other top competitors include
calf ropers Fred Whitfield, 1990
rookie of the year and 1991 world
champion and Brent Lewis, 1991
rookie of the year and second in
the world 1992.
Past world champion team
ropers Mike Beers and Dee
Pickett are entered in Saturday’s
performance. Other top PRCA
and WPRA-timed event con
tenders include J.D. Yates, Brad
Gleason, Rod Lyman, Marty
Jones, M arlene Eddlem an-

Pre-registration for the parade
would be appreciated but Brown
says that “ anyone interested can
be at the staging area at 9 a.m.
on parade day and we'll work
them into the parade line.” The
staging area will be east of Main
Street between Front Street and
Boardman Avenue.
A parade favorite will be the
Morrow County Fair and Oregon
Trail Pro Rodeo Court. Another
unique parade feature will be
honoring descendants of ‘Trail’
emigrants. Parade organizers are
trying to locate descendants of
emigrants that came west “ on a
trail” (as opposed to a train, boat
or auto). Descendants will be able
to ride on a float, and receive
special recognition during the
Pioneer Days Celebration. Coor
dinator Myrtle Brown requests
that pioneer descendants contact
her at (503) 481-3222 prior to the
parade.
