Pastor Stan Hoobing will
preach this Sunday, August 15,
at Hope and Valby Lutheran
Parish on the theme, “ Christmas
in August” , based on the scrip­
ture reading of Luke 1:46-55.
This Sunday is Mary, the Mother
of our Lord Sunday.
“ Jesus Christ, who is truly
God. is also truly human because
he was born of a human mother,
Mary,” said Pastor Hoobing.
“ Jesus is not only our Lord, but
also Mary’s Lord. He not only
redeemed us, but he also redeem­
ed Mary. Come and learn about
this amazing sister of the faith."
Service of Holy Communion
will be celebrated at Valby
Lutheran Church at 9 a.m. Sacra­
ment of Holy Baptism will also
be given to Lacy Hamlett,
daughter of Richard and Beth
Hamlett of Hillsboro. Lacy’s
father, Richard, was also baptiz­
ed at Valby.
Holy Communion will also be
celebrated at Hope Lutheran
Church.

Aug. 9 on the first leg of the trip
to World Youth day at Denver,
Co. Aug. 11-15. Bill Kuhn, Mar­
tha Munkers, Chuck Bowman,
Cynthia and Stephanie Skultety,
Joe Lindsay, Tina Chinen, Ryan
Munkers and Philip Spicerkuhn
joined other youth in Pendleton
and traveled by bus to Ogden
Utah and then on to Denver.
Every other year since 1985
youth from around the world
have joined together to celebrate
their commitment to the gospel
message of Jesus Christ. In 1985
World Youth Day was held in
Rome, Italy; in 1987 Buenos
Aires, Argentina; 1989 Santiago
de Compostela, Spain; 1991
Chestochowa, Poland. The event
is expected to draw nearlv
200,000 participants from 72
countries and will be attended by
Pope John Paul II.
To raise money for this trip the

The Flower Department hopes
to have a big show with lots of
flowers and arrangements. “ Only
you, the exhibitors, can make that
happen. So “ come on down.” ’
Exhibits will be accepted from
4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 17
and from 8-10 a.m. Wednesday,
Aug. 18.
“ The floral department at the
fair this year has some important
messages for exhibitors,” said a
spokesperson for the department.
“ The arrangements division in
the premium book is inaccurate,
having been inadvertently printed
the same as last year’s schedule.”

There were 124 people present for the senior dinner Aug. 4. Four
meals were taken out. Members of the Lutheran Churches served.
Frances Murty won the free meal ticket. Betty Carlson, the door prize
and Joan Kelly of North Carolina received the guest prize. There
were also guests from Prineville and Silverton.
At the dinner Corol Mitchell presented Sue and Darrell Vinson
the third place ribbon they had won driving their model T-Ford in
the Watermelon Festival parade at Irrigon. They represented
CAPF.CO. Eva Griffith and Lydia Wilson also rode in the car with
the Vinsons. The Meal Site Committee met following the meal.
The menu for August 18 will be barbecued pork on a bun,
cauliflower, pineapple, carrot, raisin salad and crisp. Members of
the First Christian Church will serve.
Fifteen tenants met in the office and foyer to celebrate Callie Hud­
dleston's birthday Thursday afternoon. Her birthday was on Wednes­
day. The group was treated to watermelon by Irene Sehroeder.
Friday a group of people met to play cards. Sunday evening seven
people watched the video “ Challenge the Rockies” .
Monday. Aug. 9 the senior bus let at 7 a.m. for the trip to Mt.
St. Helens.
Wednesday. Aug: 18 the bus will go to Cecil after the lunch at
theTenior center. There will be two tips to Cecil Thursday. Aug.
19. Sign up sheets for 9 a.m. and 4 p.m are in the senior center office.
Other dates to remember are: Tues. and Thurs.. 10 a.m. exercise;
Wed., noon dinner; Friday, cards 2:30 p.m.; Sunday movie, 7 p.m.
Seniors travel to Mt. St. Helens
Eighteen senior citizens rode
the senior bus to Mt. St. Helens
on August 9.
The seniors enjoyed the
scenery along the way. The new
highway was elevated enough to
view the beauty below and they
especially enjoyed viewing the
restoration of the forest and lakes
around the mountain. They also

rebroadcast Fox 49 from Stacker Butte for the past few years. (As a result, KPDX recently shut down
the lower power Channel 44 transmitter.)

While at Denver the group will
participate in workshops, cultural
activities, community service
projects, a music festival, a night
vigil and take part in all or part
o f a 13 mile pilgrimage proces­
sion. The highlight of the occa­
sion will be to attend a Mass
celebrated by Pope John Paul II.
The group will return to Hepp­
ner on Monday, Aug. 16.

JJ Shaw receives
scholarship
John J. Shaw, Heppner, receiv­
ed the Henry F. Gauss Memorial
Scholarship from the University
of Idaho. Some 3,100 scholar­
ships totalling over $2.7 million
were awarded for the 1993-94
academic year.
According to Dan Davenport,
director of student financial aid
about 40 percent of the scholar­
ships go to new students and
about 60 percent to returning
students. Individual scholarships
range in value from $100 to
$5,700, he said.
Heppner Day Care and Pre-
School have planned a bottle and
can drive on Saturday, Aug. 28.
Volunteers will be by on that day
to pickup bottles and cans.
Anyone wishing to have them
picked up earlier may call the
Day Care 676-5429 for pickup or
drop them off at the Day Care
anytime during regular business
hours.
Proceeds will be used to buy
and install a slide and activity
center for the playground at the
Day Care. The activity center is
expected to cost $4,000 and the
center is planning different fund
raisers to get enough money so
that it may be installed by spring.
