New Medicine Holds
Promise for MS
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a
chronic and debilitating disease of
the brain and spinal cord that af
fects as many as 300,000 Ameri
cans. Damage to nerve tracts in
these areas of the body results in
an impairment o f various body
functions. Persons with MS may
experience tingling and numbness
in their arms or legs or on one side
of the body, muscle spasms, visual
problems, difficulty walking, and
poor bladder control. Sometimes
there is an attack followed by a
symptom-free period for up to
three years. Symptoms may or
may not return. Some individuals
experience repeated attacks. Dis
ability and/or loss of vision may
occur. Severe disability does not
occur in every case, however.
Although there is no effective
treatment for MS at this time, a
drug being evaluated in clinical
trials may hold some promise. This
agent is called beta interferon.
Earlier this year the U.S. Food and
Drug A dm inistration (F D A ),
through its Peripheral and Central
Nervous System Drugs Advisory
Committee, reported that beta in
terferon is effective in reducing
the frequency o f neurological
problems in patients with relaps
ing-remitting MS. According to
FDC Reports , the Committee fur
ther indicated that the drug is safe
for use in MS patients and recom
mended that the drug be approved.
If appoved, beta interferon will be
the first medicine available spe
cifically for the treatment of MS.

Chamber Chatter
By Claudia Hughes, Chamber Manager
Chamber is receiving more and
more calls from people wishing
to move to our area. One of the
first questions they ask is “ Do
you have doctors and a hospital?”
Many small communities are los
ing population rapidly because of
lack o f medical facilities.
Sometimes we forget just how
fortunate we are. Our doctors are
not only important to our physical
health but to the overall health of
Heppner. It is for this reason that
the Chamber of Commerce will
be hosting an appreciation dessert
for Drs. Ed and Jeanne Berretta
from noon to 1 p.m. next Tues
day, July 13 at the Heppner Elks
Club. There will be a short pro
gram and the public is invited to
come to say ‘thank you’ to Ber-
rettas for their dedication. If you
have questions, call the Chamber
office 676-5536 or Ann Murray
676-9158.
Looking ahead: Tuesday, July
20, the program will be Gary
Neal giving Heppner an update
on Port of Morrow activities, and
July 27 chamber members are
looking forward to a tour of
Kinzua.
It’s beginning to feel like sum
mer and about time too. Camp
ing inquiries are frequent this1
time of year and thanks to John
Edmundson, of the Morrow
County Tourism Committee,
Chamber now has a handout
listing information on all RV
facilities in the county. There are
many options available, ranging
from river to mountains. Enjoy.
Thought for the week: Do not

your friend's forehead...Chinese

There were 128 people in attendance at the Senior dinner June 30.
Nine meals were taken out. Margaret Dubuque won the meal ticket
and Wilma Mabe won the door prize. Ray Gonty took the guest prize
home to Seattle, WA and Laura Searles received the birthday gift.
Members of the Catholic Church served. A special Meal Site Com
mittee meeting was held after the meal.
The menu for July 14 will be fish with tartar sauce, mashed
potatoes, carrot, pineapple raisin salad, hot rolls and pears. Members
of the Baptist Church and Christian Missionary Fellowship will serve.
There will be a senior center board meeting following the dinner.
Monday, June 26, seven seniors rode the small bus driven by Dot
Halvorsen to Hermiston where they attended a training class for meal
site volunteers presented by Julia Fowler.
The larger bus, driven by Ed Baker, took eight seniors to Irrigon
for lunch. They also toured some sites along the Oregon Trail and
the store at Cecil.
Eleven ladies enjoyed the flower arranging class Tuesday night.
The class will continue through Aug. 3.
The Sunday night movies will resume July 11 at 7 p.m.
Come ‘swing into shape’ with the exercise class any Tuesday or
Thursday morning, 10-10:30 a.m.
