John B. Ernsdorff. 76, of
Lewiston, died from complica
tions of a cerebral aneurysm at St.
Joseph Regional Medical Center,
the hospital where he served as
administrator for almost three
decades.
Ernsdorff is credited with help
ing transform the basic Lewiston
hospital into a regional medical
center. He was also an active
member in many health and civic
organizations.
Born Sept. 11, 1916 at
Yakima, WA. to John B. and Ot
tilia Marie Prasch Ernsdroff. he
attended
schools
there,
graduating from Marquette High
School in 1934. From 1937 to
1939, he attended St. Benedict’s
College at Atchison. Kan. He
moved to Spokane in 1940 where
he graduated from Gonzaga
University in 1941 with a
bachelor's degree in chemistry.
He then became an asisstant pro
fessor of chemistry at Gonzaga.
Ernsdorff married Mary Ann
Tonani at Spokane on June 9,
1941. She died in 1945. He then
married Irene Steinberger at Par
sons, Kan. on June 9, 1947. She
died in 1962. He married
Dorothy Bingaman Scofield at
Boise on April 16. 1966. She died
on Dec. 30, 1979.
He worked with the U.S. Navy
from 1945 to 1952 as a civilian
teacher in the V-5 and V-12 pro
grams at Spokane and Farragut.

Ernsdorff attended Illinois In
stitute of Technology at Chicago
from 1945 to 1947, earning a
master’s degree in industrial
engineering from Chicago
University.
From 1948 to 1950 he was a
partner in the Western Music Co.
at Pendleton. He served as a
hospital administrator at Heppner
from 1950 until moving to
Lewiston in 1954 and beginning
his tenure at St. Jospeh. He
retired in 1981.
Ernsdorff was a member of the
St. Stanislaus Catholic Church,
the Knights of Columbus, the
Lewiston Elks Lodge, the
Lewiston Chamber of Commerce
and past president of the Idaho
Catholic Hospital Association.
He also held memberships in
the Idaho Hospital Association,
the Idaho Health Facility Authori
ty and the Lewiston Kiwanis
Club.

Mother’s basket to benefit pool
He served on the board of
directors of the Sacajawea Lodge
of the Camp Fire Girls, the North
Central District Health Depart
ment, the Mental Health Depart
ment. the Idaho State Hill-Burton
Authority, Interlink and the Tri-
Parish Catholic School Board.
Ernsdorff served as a volunteer
bookkeeper for the Lewiston
chapter of the Disabled American
Veterans and as a volunteer for
Interlink, the Valley Meals on
Wheels and the American Red
Cross.
Survivors include two sons,
John P. Ernsdorff of Spokane and
F. Edward E rnsdorff of
Lewiston; two daughters.
Kathryn Baden of Pasco, WA.
and Christine Layes of Lewiston,
ID.; four sisters, Dorothy Jordan
of West Linn, Jeanne Marie of
Seattle, Wa., Paul Marie of
Portland and Jeanne Wohlers of
Olympia, WA.; a stepson Gary'
L Bingaman of Rosalie, WA.;
nine grandchildren and three step
grandchildren. Three brothers
and one sister preceded him in
death.
A prayer service was held at
Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in
Lewiston The funeral mass was
at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church
with the Revs. John Morse and
David Benedict as celebrants.
Burial was at Normal Hill
Cemetery.

Saturday, May 8 at their yard
sale. The winner of the basket
will receive a dinner and gift sur

ceeds from the drawing will
benefit the Heppner pool.
