Donald Wayne 4Butch*
Carey
A memorial service will be
held for Donald Wayne ‘Butch’
Carey, former Heppner resident,
on May 1 at the McNary Dam
Park. The service will begin at 2
p.m. Mr. Carey of Battle Moun­
tain, Nev., died April 20 at the
age of 44.
Mr. Carey was bom Aug. 30,
1948, in Bums. He lived in
Springfield from 1954 to 1960
and attended Mount Vernon
Elem entary
School
in
Springfield. He graduated from
Wheeler County High School in
Fossil in 1966. He setved four
years in the U.S. Navy as a
hospital corpsman and served
three tours of duty in Viet Nam
between 1966 and 1971. He was
wounded and decorated for
bravery and valor.
A resident of Eastern Oregon
and Eugene, Carey worked at
many trades including mill work,
logging, forestry, reforestation,
landscaping, foundry and mining.
He had been employed by Battle
Mountain Gold Co. for six years
at the time of his death. He had
been commended for his work on
a number of public service pro­
jects in the community. His hob­
bies included hunting and fishing
and he had recently taken up
photography to capture his love
for nature. He married Paula
Evans in 1974 in Condon.
He is survived by his wife at
four grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.

made to Pioneer Memorial Nur­
sing Home, P.O. Box 9, Hepp­
ner 97836.
Sweeney Mortuary, Heppner,
is in charge of arrangements.

Maria E. Arnlt
The family of Maria E. Amtt
will hold an open house from 3
to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 29
at the Gene Amtt residence at
Blake Ranch near Heppner.
Mrs. Amtt, 90, of Heppner,
died Friday, April 23, 1993 at
Pioneer Memorial Hospital.
She was bom Jan. 19, 1903 at
Saratov, Russia, to Jacob and
Katherine Rutz. The family came
to the United States in 1917 and
lived in Kansas and Missouri
before coming to Oregon in 1940.
Mrs. Amtt lived in the Portland
area before coming to Hermiston
in 1982 and had been a resident
of the Pioneer Memorial Nursing
Home.
She was a member of the
Lutheran Church.
Survivors include sons Gene
and Rodger, both of Heppner; a
sister, Molly Long of Portland;
