The lone girls tennis team
m anaged one win against
Umatilla, while the boys were
shut out in matches played last
Monday, April 12.
For the girls, Umatilla swept
the sin g le's gam es. Erika
Bergstrom was defeated by Kim
Meuller, 1-6, 1-6 and Lynde
Minster fell 0-8 to Sara Nelson,
Celeste Owen was defeated by
Grace Boullester4-8 and Jessica
Stefani lost to Missy Stuck 3-8.
In doubles, Stefani and Kandle
defeated Brooke Dilley and Bren­
da Simpson 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
For the boys Rob van’t Ent
took the match to three games but
came up short 2-6, 6-3, 5-7 to
Jav ier Ingles. Mike Green lost to
Joey Saliby 2-8.
In doubles. Rob van’t Ent and
Mike Green lost to Joey Saliby
watercolor. Anyone interested
should come to the meeting to

Rob van’t Ent wins boys’ singles

Rob van’t Ent won the boys
singles at the Helix Tennis Tour­
nament held in Pendleton last
weekend, April 17. winning four
matches on his way to the title.
In the opening round, he defeated
John West of Mac Hi, 8-2. He
then downed Ryan Taylor of
Hood River, 8-1 and Javier Ingles
of Umatilla 6-1, 3-6. 7-6 with a
7-5 tie breaker. For the cham­
pionship he defeated Doug Fine
of Helix, 6-0, 6-2.
In other boys singles, Mike
Green was eliminated after two
matches. He lost in the opening
round to Jessie Castillo of Mac Hi
6-8 then fell to Tim Melzer of
Sherman County 6-8.
The doubles team of Joey
Baker and Jerry Phillips lost to
Neustel and Skinner of Umatilla
in their opening match and were
eliminated in the second round.

Ricia Saxton Burgan, founder
of the Society for the Preserva­
tion of Fashion and Textiles, a
Boise Idaho educational organiza­
tion. will conduct a workshop on
Oregon Trail Clothing in Hepp­
ner. on Saturday, May 1. The
purpose of the workshop is to
enable residents to put together
authentic costumes for Oregon
Trail Celebrations.
The workshop will be con­
ducted at the Heppner Elemen­
tary School, from 11 a.m. to 3:30
p.m. Participants will learn the
cultural and social perspectives
that influenced costume in 1843,
receive tips for selecting ap­
propriate patterns and fabrics for
the era. Participants will learn to

and was eliminated by Kino of

In doubles action, Michelle
Kandle and Jessica Stefani lost in
the first round to Benedict and
Radley of Hood River 6-8. They
bounced back to defeat Holcomb
and Morris of Stanfield 8-2. In
the consolation final they met
fellow teammates. Laurel Tem­
ple and Celeste Owen and down­
ed them 8-3. Temple and Owen
progressed to the consolation
final by losing their opener to
Udy and Rainwater of Weston-
McEwen 2-8 and then defeated
Jaynell and Shauna of Hood
River 8-6.

At last weekend’s Condon In­
vitational Saturday, April 17, the
lone track teams slogged through
pouring rain to grab fourth place
on the girls side with 37 points
and fifth for the boys with 38.
Kim Bedortha grabbed second
in the 3000 meters with a time of
13:57.75. Also placing second
was the 1600 relay team of
C rystal M inster, M elissa
McElligott, Becky Wagenblast
and April Taylor in 4:45.61.
McElligott was third in the long
jump with a leap of 14’11” and
tied for third in the 100 in 13.88.
Jamie Lovett was fourth in the
discus with a throw of 87’1” .
Tanja Anderson placed fifth in the
discus with a throw of 83’5” .
April Taylor was fifth in the 1500
in 5:54 and Crystal Minster was
fifth in the 400 in 67.27.
For the boys, Jim Logan set an
area best in winning the 400
meters in 53.28. The 1600 relay

vault at 9’0 ” and Tony Bjerke
rounded out the scoring with a
