Merry Brannon gives much to campfire
To the Editor:
I would like to take this oppor
tunity to let the community know
what a great job Merry Brannon
has done as campfire leader. She
has given so much of her time,
not only to regular meetings but,
evening phone calls, and
numerous weekends, selling can
dy, working on a float or getting
things ready for upcoming
meetings.
Being a campfire leader is not
a paid position. It is strictly
donated time and effort. Since the
beginning of the year it seems like
Merry has had very little kind
words spoken to her and a lot of
criticism. The classes she is
teaching are twice as big as in
other towns. This makes for
chaos for one leader and one

helper. Campfire could really
benefit from parents who could
volunteer their time to help out at
meetings. After attending a few
meetings myself a little extra help
could really make a big difference
and help things go more smoothly
for Merry and the kids.
The assistant leader is Cindy
Kennedy and Bob and Aloha
DeSpain also donate alot of their
time for behind the scenes
dedication.
People like Merry don’t come
along every day, and it would
sure be nice if we could all let her
know how much we appreciate all
her hard work. Hopefully she
won't be too burnt out to tackle
it again next year.

The Morrow County Sheriffs
office reports dispatching the
following business during the past
week:
March 16: Morrow County
deputy took a report of possible
harassment. Deputy was unable
to locate any problem at this time;
M orrow County deputies
assisted the Boardman Police
Dept, with the response to an
alarm at a local business;
Morrow County deputy took a
report of a theft from a vehicle
in Boardman. Items taken were
cassette tapes and a red vinyl
billfold with the identification of
Lise Ryan. Value was $68;
M orrow County deputy
responded to the Irrigon area to
investigate a report of shots fired.
Deputy was unable to locate
anything.
March 17: Morrow County
Sheriffs office dispatched the
Heppner Fire Dept, to the
Lanham Apartm ents for a
reported alarm. Alarm turned out
to be false;
M orrow County deputy
responded to the lone area for a
dog complaint. Investigation is
continuing;
Morrow County Sheriffs of
fice dispatched the Lexington
Fire Dept to a residential fire;
M orrow County deputy
responded to the Irrigon area to
investigate a possible problem
with a juvenile;
Morrow County deputy ar
rested Tamara Denis Driscoll,
23, Irrigon, on a Morrow Coun
ty warrant for Aggravated Theft
I. She was cited and released.
March 18: Morrow County
deputy arrested Vernon Lee Piel,
Jr., 31, Boardman, on a Umatilla
County warrant for Theft I,
C rim inal Trespass II and
Criminal Trespass III. Subject
was transported to Umatilla coun
ty and lodged.
March 19; Morrow County
Sheriff’s office dispatched a
Boardman ambulance to a
residence on Fowler Road. One
person was transported to Good
Shepherd Community Hospital in
Hermiston;
M orrow County deputy
assisted the Power company in Ir
rigon for a line down on Hwy.

March 20: Morrow County
deputy took a report of Failure to
Perform Duties of a Driver, at a
residence on Kunze Road, Board-
man. Amount of value of damage
done to a vehicle belonging to Jon
Starke;

assisted the Boardman Police
Dept with an investigation of pro
perty damage at the Nomad
R estaurant and Lounge in
Boardman;
M orrow County deputy
assisted the Boardman Police
Dept with a domestic disturbance.
March 21: Morrow County
deputy responded to the Heppner
area for a report of 4-wheelers on
private property;
M orrow County deputy
responded to the Boardman area
for a civil problem over a proper
ty dispute;
M orrow County deputy
responded to the Irrigon area for
an animal problem involving
chickens;
Morrow County deputy started
an investigation on a report of
criminal mischief at the Irrigon
Post Office;
M orrow County deputy
assisted the Heppner Police Dept,
with an audible intrusion alarm in
Heppner.
March 22: Morrow County
deputy responded to the Irrigon
area for a neighborhood problem;
M orrow County deputy
responded to the Boardman area
for a neighborhood problem;

a neighborhood dispute;
Morrow County Sheriffs of
fice dispatched the Boardman am
bulance to transport a child with
respiratory problems. Child was
transported to Good Shepherd
Community Hospital.

will be held Thursday, April 1.
The meeting will be held at the

The county court has decreed
that a portion of the license fee
will be distributed to each of five
communities, Heppner, Board-
man, Irrigon, Lexington and

Queen tryouts have been schedul
ed for Sunday, March 28 at 1
p.m. at the rodeo grounds, one
mile south of Arlington on Hwy.

Girls trying out for the rodeo
queen must be 16 by May and
must have their own transporta
tion for themselves and their
horse.

On Sunday, Feb. 21 the North
Lex Livestock Club toured the
Superior Farms.
People attending were Kim
Bedortha, John Doherty and the
leader Stacey Wainwright.
Glen Krebs was the tour guide
for the afternoon. He told the
group that when they unloaded
the sheep from the trucks, they
put the loading chute over the
fence to unload the lambs in order
to keep them from returning to
the gates. They do this so they
know where their food and water
was. They also use mud blocks
instead of salt blocks because the
sheep couldn’t get as good a lick
as a cow can on a salt block.
When the sheep have feet pro
blems they put a special foot bath
mix in front of the watering
trough so when the sheep get a
drink they help their feet.
They put laundry detergent in
with their salt so when the sheep
finish eating it will help them get
the gas out of their stomachs.
This keeps the sheep from
bloating and dying. Glen starts
the sheep out on haylage then
move them to com.

New Class of Medicines
for Mental Depression

Americans suffer from major m en
tal depressive disorders. Studies
indicate that about 15 percent o f
older persons suffer from depres
sion but many depressed persons
do not obtain medical attention. Of
those who seek help, many are not
receiving the care they need. A c
cording to a report in American
Pharmacy, a paper presented at a
recent National Institutes o f Health
conference indicated that more than
60 percent o f the elderly who suf
fer from depression are not receiv
ing appropriate treatment.
The good news about all o f this
is that 80 to 90 percent o f persons
with depression can be helped. Two
important forms of care for treating
depression include antidepressant
m ed icin es and p sychotherapy
(counseling by psychiatrists and
other mental health experts).
Until recently the most effec
tive antidepressant medicines were
the tricyclic compounds and the
m onoam ine oxidase inhibitors.
The newest antidepressant medi
cines are referred to as selective
serotonin reuptake inhibitors. This
cla ss o f m ed icin es in clu d es
fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline
(Zolof). and paroxetine (Paxil).
These medicines are thought to in
crease brain levels o f a chemical
called “serotonin’’. Some studies
have shown that the newer medicines
are as effective as other antidepres
sants, but produce fewer side ef
fects, in many instances.

Pontius Pilate to
‘visit’ Lutherans
Pontius Pilate, the governor of
Judea, will share his impressions
of the last days of Jesus’ life prior
to his crucifixion at the mid-week
Lenten service at Valby and Hope
Lutheran Churches. Pilate will
visit the Valby congregation on
the Ione-Gooseberry road on
Wed. at 7 p.m. following the
soup supper at 6 p.m. On
Thursday, he will be in Heppner
at Hope Lutheran near the
Willow Creek Dam. There will
be soup and sandwich supper at
6:00 p.m. and he will be present
at the 7:00 p.m. worship service.
His talk will be “ I Am Innocent
of This Man’s Blood” based on
a scripture reading of Matthew
27:1-31.
On Sunday. March 28, Pastor
Stan Hoobing will preach at
Valby Lutheran Church, 9 a.m.
and later at 11 a.m. at Hope
Lutheran Church in Heppner. “ It
is a Martha and Mary World”
will be the theme of the sermon,
based on reading of John 11:1-53.
