The second annual Oregon
State University Horse Con
ference will be held April 3 from
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the OSU
campus in Corvallis.
The conference is a continuing
education program for horse
owners, riders and trainers who
wish to improve their knowledge

Gun club
announce
overall winners
Belt buckles, donated by Pat
Cutsforth, were awarded to the
first place winners at the Morrow
County Gun Club in the singles
classes A, B and C and to the han
dicap winner. Hats, donated by
the gun club were given to second
place winners in each event.
Each participant shot at 50
targets per event. Shooters were
classed into three classes, A, B
and C according to their eight-
week average scores. Yardage
handicaps were set for each con
testant for the final 50-bird set.
Curtis Cutsforth was the first
place winner in the A-class
singles with a score of 46 out of
50 targets broken. Jeff Cutsforth
and Curt Day tied for second
place with 45.
Mike Adams won the B-class
singles with a perfect score of 50.
Harvy Childers took second with
48.
Jack Hentges won the C-class
singles with a 42 and Roger Mor-
timore placed second with a 41.
The 50-bird handicap event
was won by Mike Adams
shooting 46 targets from the 20
yard line. Brian Thompson
finished with 45 for second place.

This concludes the regular Sun

and various medical problems.
Lectures will be given by
veterinarians from the OSU Col
lege of Veterinary medicine. The
program is jointly sponsored by
the College of V eterinary
Medicine and the OSU Animal
Science Department.
All levels of owner experience
are invited to attend; however,
lectures are designed for those
who are more experienced.

During the past year, the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) approved 26 new prescrip
tion medicines. During the previ
ous year (1991, 30 new products
were approved for general use. It
often is less expensive to use newly
approved m edicines than other
forms o f treatment. For example,
a recent report from the Pharma
ceutical Manufacturers Associa
tion (PM A) indicates that treatment
o f gastrointestinal ulcers with
medicine is about 25 times less
expensive than surgical treatment.
A separate study by the PMA in
dicates that about one-half o f all
the progress in medical science in
the U.S. by the year 2000 will
com e from advances in new drug
products.
On the average, it takes about
12 years for prescription medi
cines to be approved, starting with
product form ulation and pre-
clin ical trials in test animals.
Currently the average cost o f de
veloping a new drug is over $200
million.
Of the new medicines approved
in 1992, 11 are compounds that
provide therapeutic advancement.
These 11, which received priority
review by the FDA. include sotalol
(Betapace), halofantnne ( Halfan\
zalcitabine ( H ivid ). itraconazole
(Sporannx), sumatriptan ( Imitrex ),
atovaquone ( Mepron ), mivacurium
[Mivacron), rifabutin (Mycobutin),
finasteride (Proscar), paclitaxel
(TaxoD , and teniposide ( Vumon).
