Hello to the voters at large of
Morrow County. This coming
week you will be asked to vote
for Port of Morrow’s commis-
sioners for two expiring terms. I
would like to recommend the re-
election o f incumbent Dan
Creamer. He has served us well
in this capacity and has the in
terest of the entire county in mind

in tin hmetions of the Port of
Morrow and the many dreams of
the future that arc anticipated.

the satisfaction of realizing the
completion of some of the many

This letter is written in regards
to position no. 2 race on the Port
of Morrow Commission Board
coming up for election in March.
With the continuing diversifica
tion in business development go
ing on at the Port of Morrow it
is more important than ever to
have commissioners with a solid
financial background to analyze
business ventures and help Port
Commissioner Gary Neal review
possible business relationships.
John Grace, a local banker, has
those qualifications. Besides
working in a commercial bank on
a daily basis, John also serves on
the GEODC board where he has
gained valuable experience in
reviewing business plans.
His expertise and experience
would be a valuable asset to the
Port of Morrow.
Both in incumbent Dan
Creamer and Gene Allen are long
time residents of North Morrow
County and are quality in
dividuals, however both of them
lack the financial background that
I feel is important in this race.

Sharkey puts in maximum effort
To the Editor:.
I would like to voice my sup
port for Bill Sharkey for reelec
tion to the board of commis
sioners for the Port of Morrow.
I have known Bill since he came
to Boardman some 20 years ago.
Since that time Bill has been in
volved in a lot o f public
volunteerism. He has been a city
councilman, a member of the
board of directors of the park and
cemetery districts and for the last
eight years as a port
commissioner.
Bill is not one to get elected and
then sit there with a title and do
nothing. When Bill takes on a job
he puts the maximum effort into
making sure that the job has been
done right, as is evidenced by his
time spent this last year on the
commission. He took time out of
his day on 80 different occasions
to be involved in port business.
There are few people with this
commitment and time. There has
also been a tremendous amount
of growth in the eight years that
Bill has been involved. It is for
these reasons that 1 urge you in
joining me in supporting Bill
Sharkey for reelection.

row Commissioner. John's ex
perience as vice president of
GEODC has already brought us
some local benefits.
He has some ideas about using
the federal Jobs Training Partner
ship Act to develop local sons and
daughters to fill the ever expan
ding employment base at the port.
Our Port of Morrow has been
an aggressive and irreplaceable
leader in locating industries to
add value to local produce and
develop jobs. John Grace’s
energy and experience would be
a nice addition to the port
commission.

To the Editor:
I am writing this letter in sup
port of Dan Creamer for port
commissioner. Dan has been able
to have a positive impact on the
port these last four years. Dan.
as a retired tug boat captain has
been active in the planning and
design of the expansion of the
dock facilities. Dan has also
helped to pass the resolution in
both the planning commission
and the port commission to build
a road through the Boeing proper
ty from lone to Boardman.
Dan has worked hard with the
Oregon Public Ports Association
(as vice president) to lobby for
Bill 9% (gas pipeline for the co
gen plant), as well as Bill 2429,
which helped with dock and
dredging activities.
Dan has also been active in the
Pacific Northwest Waterways
Association’s efforts to gain help
at the federal level towards dredg
ing, fish and timber issues. Vote
for Dan Creamer.

Grace has solid financial background

1 was delighted to see that John
Grace, the manager of Inland
Empire Bank's Morrow and Gil
liam County bank branches, has
thrown his hat into the ring for
Port of Morrow Commissioner.
John’s expertise in financing
and business developm ent,
together with his clear
headedness, and a can do attitude
towards getting a job accomplish
ed, would dovetail well with the
leadership exhibited by Kent
Goodyear, commission president,
and Gary Neal, the Port manager.
I have worked with John over
the last several years on the board
of directors, executive and loan
committees of the Greater
Eastern Oregon Development
Corporation, and have grown to
appreciate his good judgement,
ability to work with people and
his deep knowledge in finance.
These qualitites have helped that
organization grow.
John has been instrumental in
disbursing the GEODC’s offices
from Umatilla County to Hepp
ner, where we now have our new
headquarters, and in getting the
services of the GEODC spread to
all of the outlying communities in
our five county area.
I see John Grace as an emerg
ing leader in a younger genera
tion of Morrow County citizens
who can add tremendous new
dimensions to the abilities of the
Port of Morrow in its service to
business and industry, and to all
of us citizens.
I strongly recommend your
vote in support of John Grace in-

that time has had a great deal of
input into the direction of the
Port. He has great knowledge of

and his help was invaluable for
several months when we were
between port managers.

time and effort over the last two
and a half years with me on the

When the Port of Morrow was
formed, no provision was made
to zone the county-wide district
to provide representation on the
Port Commission which would
assure representation of the entire
county. At port commission elec
tions, com m issioners were
selected on the basis of the
highest votes even if all commis
sioners should come from only
one area of the county. While ser
ving on the port commission, I
was concerned about this because
it held the possibility of leaving
some com m unities without
representation on the Port Com
mission. Other commissioners
were equally concerned. An in
vestigation revealed that at the
late date, attempts at zoning
would have almost meant dissolv
ing the port and starting over.
This was out of the question.
However in recognition of the

That is what Arthur Allen
believed two and four decades
ago.
He was very successful in that.
If you choose politics as usual
with no particular vision in mind,
trying to promote economic
growth for all of Morrow Coun
ty. Currently, he is on the
negotiating committee for the co
generation plant, and with his
support, this soon could be a
reality and a great asset to Mor
row County.
Bill Sharkey tries to be as ac
curate and concise as possible, he
wants to know all the facts before
voting any decision that affects
you, the citizens. His experience
and knowledge of the Port of
Morrow is of great value. I
strongly urge you to vote and re
elect Bill Sharkey, Port of Mor

To the Editor:
It is my pleasure to recommend
to the voters of Morrow County
my support for the election of
John Grace to the Port of Mor
row Commission. Our generation
of citizens in Morrow County
needs to have leaders of John’s
ability speaking on our behalf for
the future development and pro
gress of Morrow County.
John Grace’s ability to cut
clearly to the point and seek out
new and better ways to finance
business have been greatly ap
preciated by us in our ongoing
business affairs and I am sure that
the same sort of expertise would
be invaluable to the Port of Mor
row Commission.
John’s service to Morrow
County includes serving on the
planning commission of Morrow
County, the board of directors of
Greater Eastern Oregon Develop
ment Corporation, and as past
director for Community Action
problem the commission voted to
number all of the commissioner's
positions so that voters would
vote on each position separately
and in that way there would be at
least a good chance that equal
representation could be maintain
ed. For the past eight years this
has worked well. Present com
missioners are: Kent Goodyear,
Heppner; John Bristow, lone;
Larry Lindsay, north Lexington;
Bill Sharkey, Boardman; and Dan
Creamer, Irrigon. These commis
sioners have w orked well
together in the best interest of the
county wide port district. All are
exprienced and have spent much
time and effort in furthering the
port. I believe this is a pattern of
representation on the port com
mission that needs to be
maintained.

As a past port commissioner of
Morrow County, I know for a
fact, it takes a great deal of time
and energy to be a port
commissioner.
An effective and efficient com
missioner should travel and attend
meetings outside of the area, in
addition to the monthly port
meetings, to be a well-informed
commissioner. Bill Sharkey has
done this. He has worked part of
or all of 80 days in the past year,
serving you the voters of Morrow
County. Obviously, he is con
cerned about the welfare of Mor
row County and its citizens.
He knows the history of the
Port of Morrow, how it func
tions, and what its goals are in
“ Joint-V enture” committee
negotiating a successful conclu
sion to the agreement on the
“ Coyote Springs” Co-generation
Plant to be built by Portland
General Electric.
When you vote for this impor
tant position, I hope you consider
the balance we currently have on
the Port Commission. Re-elect
Bill Sharkey.
