Area scholarship trust organized
The newly organized chapter of
“ Dollars for Scholars” program,
South Morrow County Scholar
ship Trust, announces that it is
now a tax deductible, non-profit
organization, complete with by
laws and an active board of
directors.
South
M orrow
County
Scholarship Trust is an organiza
tion designed to help graduates of
lone and Heppner High Schools
with aid for post-secondary
education. One of its chief short
term goals is to raise $2,000 by
June 1 to qualify for matching
funds from the state scholarship
fund. If the goal is reached in
time, it plans to award two
scholarships, one each to lone
and Heppner, this spring. Its
chief long-term goal is to develop
a large trust fund so that when the
Carl W. Troedson Educational
Fund ceases to exist in the year
2023 there will be adequate funds
available to provide students with
scholarship aid or grants.
The organization also seeks to
be a resource for existing scholar-
ship committees, to work towards
a common application format and
to assist any group in making
known the availability of funding
for further study, said a trust
news release. It is not the purpose
of the organization to replace
other scholarship committes or
groups, they said.

Heppner branch. All monetary
donations are tax deductible.
Emergency Center remodeling delayed
While the destruction of nerve
gas at the Umatilla Army Depot
is on hold until the means to
destroy the gas has been decid
ed, the M orrow County
Emergency Management Center
project will proceed, according to
Casey Beard, Em ergency
Management director.
Construction on the center has
been delayed, however, because
of a dispute between Morrow
County and the federal govern
ment on funding for remodeling
not originally planned for. The
government is asking the county
to pay for the changes.
Beard says, however, that other
projects have received more
monies than granted for Morrow
County’s emergency manage
ment project, and is asking the
government to cover the addi
tional remodeling costs.
The Emergency Management
Center and the Morrow County
Sheriff s office will be housed at
the former U.S. Forest Service
building on Sage Hill Drive in
Heppner. The Sheriffs office is
now located in the courthouse
basement.
School board hears growth recommendations

bia Junior High School. Board-

CJH; Boardman and Irrigon stu
dents in grades nine to 12 attend
RHS. It also recommends that a
library be added and the present
library be remodeled for staff and
conference rooms and additional
storage space be built.
The 10 new classrooms at Col
umbia Junior High School would
include six classrooms for new
sixth grade students who are cur
rently at A.C. Houghton and Sam
Boardm an, and two new
classrooms to accommodate for
the growth of seventh and eighth
grade classrooms.
The CJH plan also calls for the
provision of disabled access bet
ween the upper classrooms and
the lower level, which houses the

thoughts and feelings of others.
Developing an attitude of caring,
concern, and a connection with
others is as worthwhile for
children as improving their self
esteem. Families offer an ideal
emotional climate for facilitating
both of these tasks.

There is no staff room at present.
The growth committee also
recommended the resolution of
safety issues at Heppner High
School-provision for disabled ac
cess between the lower level and
upper level of the building; Hepp
ner Middle School-provision for
disabled access to the top floor;
and lone Elementary School-
provision of disabled access to all
levels.
According to the district
superintendent Ralph Reed, an
elevator at lone Elementary
School must be installed to pro
vide disabled access or the school
will not be allowed to remain
open. Cost is estimated around
$250 thousand.
The final recommendation and
receiving the last priority of the
committee was to build or
remodel the gymnasium at Hepp
ner Elementary School.
In other business the board:
-accepted the resignation of
board chairman Alan Holmes. No
reason was given for his
resignation;
-elected Scott Bauska. Board-
man, board vice-chairman;
-accepted resignations from
Janice Skaggs, HES assistant
custodian and Nancy Leroux,
RHS math teacher;
-approved employment of Benn
Houk, CJH head track coach;
Vickie Broden, HJH assistant
track coach; and Thad Kili
ingbeck, CJH transfer from assis
tant to head baseball coach;
-approved employment of Dr.
Don Holes as tenure principal at
CJH for 1993-94 and Bryan
Traylor as third year probationary
principal at HES/HJH for
1993-94;
-selected a screening commit
tee to screen applications for the
superintendent's position;
-approved raising adult lunch
prices at the schools to $2 begin
ning March 1;
-appointed LuAnn Noack to the
Boardm an-Irrigon Advisory
Committee;
-heard the first readings of
school bus policies, payments in
lieu of transportation and sexual
harassment policies.
The next meeting will be held
March 15 at lone High School.
