Letters to the Editor
Show some school spirit
To the editor:
"T w o bits, four bits, six bits
a dollar; all for Heppner stand up
and holler.” Where were you
guys? I thought maybe I had
misunderstood. ‘Two bits, four
bits, six bits a dollar; all for
Heppner sit down and don’t
cheer.”
Heppner has the potential for
two state championship teams in
basketball. Let’s give the coaches
and teams all the support we can
to help them take us to the top.
The next time you’re asked to
show your support, exercise your
knee joints and slap your hands
together and let these basketball
players know w e’re behind them
all the way.
P.S. Maybe we could even sur
prise the judges at district and win
the sportsmanship award.
Sincerely,
(s) Molly Rill

Treat animals humanely
To the Editor:
This letter is intended for any
person who "dumps” an animal.
Be it a cat on someone’s farm, a
dog in a neighborhood or either
o f the two out in a secluded area.
If you can't take care o f your pet
anymore or have decided that
you just don’t want it, what
makes you think that anyone else
does.
My family has acquired one
large family dog due to a
neighbor moving and leaving
him. a medium size female who
was
" d u m p ed ”
in
our
neighborhood and unfortunately
found our house and now we have
11 puppies that she had Jan. 31.
We never wanted these dogs,
really can't afford to feed them
but until we can Find good homes
or just plain have them destroyed.
we're stuck with them. 1 admit to
be an avid animal lover who has
difficulty turning away hungry
animals, but it’s not fair to take
advantage o f that.
Please, please have respect for
the animals and the people. Times
are tough, all people need are
more mouths to feed when you’re
not expecting them. If you don’t
want or can’t afford a pet, give
it away, or have it put down in
a humane way. Don’t dump your
problems on other people. We
might just have enough o f our
own. For my family and me, we
now have 13.
By the way, any good person
who wants a puppy (in Five
weeks) or a great family dog, let
me know.
Thank you,
(s) Shanna Paullus

To the Editor:
When I was spending the night
at a friend’s house I helped him
do his paper route. We were
delivering papers on Shobe
Street.
We were delivering papers by
his house. A big black dog came
running after us. I dropped the
newspapers and ran. Then one of
my friends tried to deliver the
paper but the dog came after him
again. A kid grabbed a news
paper and threw it at the dog who
was nipping at my friend's leg.
What I’m trying to say is get
rid of the dog. Give it to someone
in the country where it can’t be
running after people and biting
them. If it has to be put to sleep
then do it instead o f getting Fin
ed. That’s what I would do. I’m
proud o f my statement too.

To the Editor:
I am a sixth grader o f Heppner
middle school. I am writing this
letter because I think that people
that play pro football, basketball,
baseball etc. players should not
get paid as much as they do. They
should cut their wages and help
the homeless in the United States
with the money. The pro players
don’t need the money as bad as
the homeless do. The homeless
would be thrilled to have a roof
over their heads and have enough
money left over after paying taxes
to buy a little bit o f food. The
homeless don’t even have any
money to buy food with and
sometimes starve.
We don’t have as many pro
blems as in Somalia and some
other places in the world, but we
have enough to notice. The
players may get mad but they will
get over it if they give at least
some money to a good cause in
the United States. If any o f the
pro players gave some o f their
money to the homeless, I think
that’s great.
Sincerely,

I think Herm iston Police
Department and Mayor shouldn’t
buy new police cars so often for
the ofFicers. It's just a waste of
money. They should only buy
new cars when they can't get the
car Fixed. Instead they should do
something about gangs with that
money. They may already have
to hire police ofFicers at the
school in Hermiston. If they just
went and caught gang members.
then asked them where the other
gang members live then they can
Finish the gangs off.
Parents, teachers and the police
officers all need to work together.
If they get together they can stop
crime in Hermiston for good.

To the Editor:
I am sick and tired o f the log
gers clear cutting the mountain
areas and then fencing it o ff so
animals can’t get in to feed. I
think they should not clear cut.
But if they have to get logs they
should just cut a little amount out
o f one area and then go to another
area and cut a little. That way one
whole area will not be destroyed.
Sincerely,

I think that there should be
more forest service rangers out

won’t be as many people break

I am a sixth grader at Heppner

about how Jack in the Box should
be more careful about con
taminated food. I think that they
should check their meat so they
don’t kill or hurt anymore people.
All restaurants and stores need
to be more careful. The govern

Hi, my name is Jessica Maben.
I am a sixth grader at Heppner

issue is getting out of hand. The
owls don’t give anything to us so
why should we give anything to
them? I understand animals are
important too, but don’t ignore
human beings. Human beings are
more important than spotted
owls.
We need timber industry.

and I think that the farmers in
America are under paid. We
work just about all year and earn
peanuts. The farmers that go
bankrupt live like there is no
tomorrow. Because o f them the
farmers that still work have to
pull twice the weight and after
that the insurance, taxes, and the
payments on top o f that more
farmers go bankrupt.
I feel that farmers should
receive tax breaks from the
government, I think they pay too
much on the land and how much
money they earn.
Farmers who have a lot o f their
land in CRP are too well paid by
the government. Those o f us who
are trying to farm the land need
some breaks too.

I’ve been a Trail Blazer fan for
a long time. The Trail Blazers
aren't being good role models for
the youth o f Oregon.
Everybody says that we don’t
have many role models and when
we do they go o ff and set bad ex
amples for kids. The kids think
that their actions are something
To the Editor:
I think the Trail Blazers are do
ing really badly and it makes me
really mad to know that they lost
four straight games at home. If
they want to be champions they
better shape up.
I think the newspaper articles
are getting on the Blazers mind
too much and putting pressure on
them. The Blazers are not being
very good role models to the kids.
I think other people feel the same.
I think that the Blazers need to
put this incident behind them. A
public apology on T.V. would be
appropriate. The young people o f
Oregon need them as role
models, as we don't have many.
But they have to earn our respect
again.

A lot o f kids want a swimming
pool for the city. A lot o f parents
want one too, to get their kids out
o f the house. The summers when
we had the pool were boring
enough, because it was closed
half the time for repair. An in
door pool is also an option, but
most people just want a pool. I
think an indoor pool should be put
in place o f the old pool. And
make it kind o f like the Pendleton

small basketball court.

I live in the Blake Ranch addi
tion for the last two months we
have had to drive down to the
highway to get on the bus.
Then someone told my parents
that we could get paid for the
miles and gas we lose in our car.
The Morrow County School
District paid us one time and then
gave us a letter on February 4 ,
1993, that said we would not be
getting paid and that we should
car pool. We don’t have a van or
car to car pool with.
I think the school district
should pay us for the four miles
we waste in the morning and the
four miles in the evening.
We know you don’t want the
bus driver hurt. We just think we
should be paid.
