lone Cardinals keep perfect record

The lone Cardinals kept their
league record perfect over the
weekend, downing a much-
improved Helix team Friday
night, Jan. 29 and pulling out an
important w in over Wasco Coun
ty on Saturday, Jan. 30. Both
games w ere played in front of an
enthusiastic home crowd.
The Card’s league mark now
moves to 9-0 and their overall
season record improves to 12-4.
The last time Helix met lone,
lone trounced Helix by 44 points.
This time. Helix came looking tor
an upset, but got upset themselves
75-55. For the first three
quarters, it looked like they might
get it. The Grizzlies led 19-17 at
the end of one and 35-31 at the
half. But thanks to a key three-
point bucket at the buzzer by
sparkplug, Jake Bacon, the Cards
started to regain their momentum.
With two minutes to go in the
third period, lone finally took the
lead, 43-41. With increased
defensive pressure and improved
ball movement, the Cards put on
a spurt that changed the game
from a two-point game to a
20-point game. The final score
was 75-55.
Aaron Heideman led all scorers
with 23 points. Jim Logan added
17 points, which included three
treys, two in the big fourth
quarter. Heideman also had nine
boards as the C ards out-
rebounded the Grizzlies, 37-15.
Logan had four steals and David
Wagenblast handed out 11 assists.
Wagenblast also had three block
ed shots in the game.
lone shot 30 of 54 from the
field for an outstanding 56 per
cent. That percentage was
bolstered by hot 11 of 16 shooting
in the fourth quarter. At the line,
they canned 10 of 14 for 71 per
cent. Helix was no slouch in the
shooting department either, mak
ing 22 of 46 for 48 percent from
the floor and eight of 12 for 67
percent from the line.

Word has been received of the
death of Phou Thongdy on
January 9, 1993 in Walla Walla,
WA. Mr. Thongdy, 60, died after
several months of illness with
cancer.
The Thongdy family was
brought to Heppner from a
refugee camp in Thailand in 1979
by a group of sponsors from the
All Saints Episcopal Church.
They lived in Heppner for seven
years before moving to Walla
Walla.
Phou is survived by his wife
Somchith, two daughters
Boaphith and her four children all
in Walla Walla, and Phonetip, a
senior at Walla Walla High
School: two sons Somkhith (Kitt),
a freshman at Walla Walla Com
munity College and Pradith
(Tom) and his two children of
Hermiston.

PGT-PG&E PIPELINE
EXPANSION PROJECT
Bechtel Corporation, project
manager, announces the beginn
ing of 1993 construction of the
PGT-PG&E Pipeline Expansion
Project. As was done in six other
Oregon counties in 1992, Bechtel
and its contractors are installing
a second pipeline parallel and in
terconnecting with an existing
natural gas pipeline, a process
known as “ looping” . The second
line is being constructed largely
within the existing right-of-way,
from the Canadian-U.S. boun
dary to a terminus in central
California. When completed, the
project will transport over 900
million cubic feet of natural gas
per day to serve markets in the
Pacific Northwest and California.
Approximately 70.3 miles of
construction will be completed
through portions of Gilliam,
Morrow and Umatilla counties in
northern Oregon in 1993. In
Morrow County, approximately
34.5 miles of pipeline will be in
stalled, from a point on the
Gilliam County line two miles
south of Eightmile Canyon, to
where the route enters Umatilla
County five miles north of But
ter Creek Junction (midway bet
ween Highway 30 and Route
207).
Construction will begin the se
cond week of February. Selected
portions of the 11 miles between
Gilliam County and Willow
Creek (at lone) will be completed
by mid-April, to avoid impacts to
several special status animal
species during their reproductive
season. The remainder of this
section will be constructed begin
ning in early July, with final
testing and restoration completed
in mid-October.
Northeast of lone, construction
will also begin the second week
of Feburary and proceed nor
theastward; installation of this
section will be completed the first
week of May.
Final testing and restoration of
the entire 70.3 miles will take
place from August to October.

porated of Houston. Texas was
hired by Bechtel to construct ap
proximately 151 miles of the Ex
pansion Project in Oregon, of
which 80 miles was constructed
in 1992. The entire 850-mile pro
ject, which traverses portions of
Idaho, Washington. Oregon and
California, is scheduled for com
pletion by November 1993.
