Lady Cards easily defeat Helix, 52-25 Cards beat W asco County

The lady Cardinals stayed on
the winning track over the
weekend, easily defeating Helix,
52-25 on Friday, Jan. 29 but
needed a bigger effort to capture
the win over Wasco County on
Saturday, Jan. 30. Their league
record improved to 8-1 and their
season mark moved to 11-5.
The lady Cards buried the
Grizzlies in the opening minutes,
using a full court press to build
a 20 point lead. All but one player
scored in the 52-25 win.
Melissa McElligott scored 18
points to lead the team, followed
by Jamie Lovett with 14.
McElligott also had 11 rebounds,
four steals and four blocked
shots. Junior Randy Wise, had
four rebounds, two steals and two
blocked shots, and sophomore
Kim Bedortha contributed six re
bounds, two assists, two steals
and four points on two of three
shooting from the floor.
The lady Cards shot 21 of 54
for 39 percent from the floor and
four of six for 67 percent from the
line.

The Wasco County Redsides
came to town January 29 with an
umblemished league record but
found the lady Cardinals too
much to handle as the Cards beat
the Redsides 53-35.

to get within six. At the start of
the fourth quarter April Taylor
nailed a three pointer and then the
Cards stole the ball four times and
capitalized each time. Suddenly
the lead was stretched to 18-20
points and the Redsides had no
response. “ We pressured them
the whole game and they started
to get tired,” noted coach Dana
Heideman. “ Their coach told me
they had never had anyone
pressure them so hard,” he said.

game of the year, with 12 points
on five of nine shooting, eight re
bounds, five steals and five
assists. Melissa McElligott had
12 points and eight rebounds. She
also had two blocked shots and
she and Taylor each had seven

Wasco County was previously
undefeated in league play and
they seemed determined to give
the lone Cardinals a run for their
money but ended up short chang
ed 57-47 as lone took the win.
The Cardinals led 14-8 at the end
of the first quarter, and held that
same margin at halftime, 26-20.
The game was close all the
way, with the smallest lead being
two points and the largest six
points until the final three minutes
of the game. With a couple of key
steals and baskets, the Cardinals
were finally able to put the game
out of reach.
Aaron Heideman led the team
in scoring with 19 points. Jared
Ashbeck was the only other Car
dinal in double figures with 11.
Heideman also paced the reboun
ding attack with 15 boards

41-30. David Wagenblast led the
team with nine assists and four
steals.
The Cards shot 24 of 54 for 44
percent from the field and eight
of 12 for 67 percent from the line.
Wasco County hit 19 of 59 for 32
percent from the floor and nine
of 11 for 82 percent from the free
throw line.
“ It was a good devensive
game,” said coach Del LaRue.
“ Both games this weekend were
good for us. We needed some
good tough competition,” he

43 percent from the field while
the Honkers struggled to make
just 13 of 56 for 23 percent. lone

free throw attempts.

Heppner High School students Tracy Blodgett (L) and
Jennifer Burkenbine presented their composite artist sketch
of the new design for the Chamber’s recognition board to be
placed in front of a Heppner business each month. The two
were guests at a Chamber meeting recently. Burkenbine’s
drawing had been selected by chamber members. Art teacher
Ron Forrar and some of his students will make and paint the
board. The board is expected to be ready sometime in the
spring.
