By Jeremy Maddern
By Anne Morter
On Saturday, Jan. 9, the Cards
hosted Dufur, the number one
ranked team in the first two Class
IA polls, and came away with a
big, big 62-54 win. The Rangers
jumped out to a 9-0 lead before
the Cardinals answered the wake-
up call with a 10 point run of their
own. From there it was a two or
three point see-saw battle until the
end when the Cards pulled ahead
for good.
Aaron Heideman led the Car
dinals in scoring with 16 points.
Tony Bjerke added 11. Heideman
had another super night on the
boards, pulling down 20 re
bounds, 13 of them offensive.
Deacon Heideman added 12 and
Ryan Halvorsen had 10 as the
Cards once again dominated the
boards 61-43. “ They are doing
a great job on the boards,” com
mented LaRue. He also noted that
the team had more than half of
their rebounds (31) on the offen
sive end of the court, something
that is not often seen.
David Wagenblast led the team
with eight assists and four steals
and Deacon Heideman had four
blocked shots.

the floor for 40 percent. They
continued to struggle at the line
where they shot 10 of 21 for 48

percent. “ I’d like to think it was
because of our defensive
pressure,” commented coach Del
LaRue. At the line they hit 11 of
17 for 65 percent.
“ It was a big win,” said
LaRue. “ It was nice to have it
this early in the season, everyone
worked hard for it,” he added.
Lady Cardinals beat Dufur, 47-17
By Anne Morter
On Saturday, Jan. 9, the Lady
Cardinals were expecting a
tougher match than they got when
Dufur came to town. To the
credit of the Cards’ defense, the
Rangers made just 17 points in
the game and shot an anemic 16
percent from the floor. “ They
shot well in warm-ups,” said
coach Dana Heideman, but he
noted that their offense basically
fell apart under the pressure of his
team 's half-court kamikaze
defense. The final score was
47-17.
Melissa McElligott again led
all scorers with 16 points, follow
ed by April Taylor and Jamie
Lovett w ith nine each. The Cards
held a substantial rebounding ad
vantage, 37-21. Tanja Anderson
led the way with eight while
Lovett and Crystal Minster each
added seven. Minster had six
assists and four steals to lead the
team. Lovett also had four steals.
The Lady Cards shot 18 of 46
for 39 percent from the field and
nine of 21 for 43 percent from the
line. Dufur made just six field
goals out of 36 attempts for 16
percent but they were five of six
from the line for 83 percent.
“ It was good experience,” said
Heideman. “ In the second half.
The Heppner Mustangs began
their quest of a league champion
ship Saturday Jan. 9 at Umatilla
with their first league game
against the Umatilla Vikings. The
Mustangs were coming off a
dismal pre-season going 2-3.
Heppner got off to a slow start
and saw themselves trailing 13-9
after the first quarter of play had
ended. The Vikings managed to
keep Heppner’s top scorer Rick
Koffler, in check as Koftler end
ed the night with only seven
points. The Vikings keyed on
Koffler and opened the inside for
Tony Burt and Scott Coe who
combined for 34 points. The
Mustangs shots started to fall in
the second quarter as they took a
slim two point lead into the half.
Heppner opened the second
half with an intimidating press
that led to many turnovers for the
Vikings. The Mustangs ran away
with the game as they outscored
the Vikings by 13 in the third
quarter. The Mustangs kept focus
as they wrapped up their first
league win of the season 68-47.
The key to the Mustangs victory
was their rebounding as they had
15 offensive rebounds that led to
easy points. Russel Proctor was

The Heppner Fillies kept their
five game winning streak alive
with a 57-47 league win over the
Umatilla Vikings last Saturday,
Jan. 9 at Umatilla. The Fillies had
a tougher time with the Vikings
than they wanted to. It looked like
it would be close as the Vikings
held the Fillies in check and on
ly trailed by four after the first
quarter.
The Fillies were having trou
ble shutting down Umatilla's top
gun Kristin Charlo who finished
with 21 points and 20 rebounds.
Heppner increased their lead to
eight points going into the second
half. The Vikings looked like
they might be done, but started
the second half by keeping pace
with the Fillies in the third quarter
and trailed by only seven going
into the fourth quarter.
The Fillies were too much for
the Vikings as they ran away
from them as soon as they came
within reach of the lead. Hepp
ner, sparked by Holly Eckman,
who finished with 16 points,
brought home their first league
win. Char Coe was a key factor
as she came off the bench and
provided a lift for the starters con
tributing 11 points and some solid
play. Kelsie Evans also finished
w ith 11 points. The Fillies are 1-0
in league play and 7-0 overall for
the season, as they beat the Car-
