Brown receives Boardman award
%/
Myrtle Brown, the chief ar
chitect of Boardman’s 75th bir-
thday celebration, was named
Boardman’s Outstanding Citizen
for 1992. The title was conferred
by the Boardman Chamber of
Commerce at its annual awards
banquet December 16.
Brown planned, organized and
then worked the details for a
series of events celebrating the
75th year that Boardman has call
ed itself a city. The celebration
included a founder’s day ball in
February, the mayor’s golf tour
nament in March, the city’s first
Cinco de Mayo celebration in
May, the town on wheels party
in July, pioneer days with an In
dian and mountain-man rendez
vous in August and greatly ex
panded Christmas tree lighting
programs in both 1991 and 1992.
In presenting the award. Jack
Strege, chairman of the selection
committee, said that Brown’s
perseverance and drive were in
strumental. “ Without her, 1992
simply would not have happen
ed,” he said. Brown thanked the
chamber and all the volunteers
who played a role in the year-long
festivities. “ It was you,” she
said, “ who made it all happen.’’
Port of Morrow manager Gary
Neal and Dr. Robert Boss were
also nominated for the award.
Neal raised $27,000 for the pur
chase of a travel bus for River
side High School students and
Boss was instrumental in organiz
ing the Cinco de Mayo
celebration.
Boss was installed as the new
Chamber president and Board-
man Mayor Bill Brown as vice
president. Outgoing president Ed
Glenn introduced a number of
members who have been impor
tant to what he called a ‘ ‘banner”
year for the chamber. Glenn now
serves as chairman of the board.

Antacids: Effective and
Fast Acting Medicines
According to comments by Dr.
Hugo Gallo-Torres in a recent issue
o f Pharmacy Times , antacids are
fast acting and should bring relief in
a matter of minutes. Several gastro
intestinal problems respond favor
ably to antacid medicines. These
conditions include:
Peptic Ulcer Disease: About 10
percent of all Americans develop
an ulcer or sore in the stomach or
small intestine at some point in
their lives. Antacids are used along
with other medicines such as the
H2 antagonists to neutralize acid,
allowing ulcers to heal.
Heartburn: The burning sensa
tion caused by stomach acid and
partially digested food that backs
up into the low er end o f the
esophagus often is relieved with
antacids.
Indigestion (sour stomach): An
upset stomach or acid indigestion
may mean that the lining o f the
stomach is inflamed due to excess
acid secretion. Antacids and other
medicines may provide relief.
Dr. Gallo-Torres suggests that if
there is no immediate relief o f indi
gestion or heartburn, some other
conditon may be present that re
quires the attention of a physician.
Antacids can interact with certain
m edicines and vitamin/mineral
preparations. Antacid side effects
include diarrhea (magnesium-con
taining antacids) and constipation
(aluminum-containing antacids).

You m ay be w ondering why the rather large ad app eared
in last w eek's paper asking for your opinion of my running for
m ayor. To follow is a story of why this happened and w hy it’s
costing m e so m uch to retract that ad.
O n D ecem ber 11th, 1992 I was part of a conspiracy to get
Jack G reen e of Lake O sw ego, O regon on his 40th Birthday.
I knew this w as dangerous because Jack is a notoriously sore
loser--as the ad in the H eppner G azette proves.
This is w hat I did to Jack G reene:
I sim ply took him out to breakfast on said m orning and due
to the fact that he gulped his food down had to side track him
and ask to go see his one year old daughter at hom e. W hile
I w as m aking this diversionary action, m y cohorts trashed his
desk and did one other thing that m ade M r. G reen e (a V E R Y
tidy person) so m ad that he placed last w e e k ’s ad. Jack w as
especially bitter because he was so sure that I had only trash
ed his office and m ade him pay for breakfast, he w ished m e
well on my trip back to Eastern O regon.
T he crowning blow for M r. G reen e w as that my cohorts a t
tached a few pounds of chicken m anure above the catalytic
converter in his pick-up. H e w ent around for quite aw hile fum
ing over the lovely fragrance em anating from his vehicle (even
now it retains som e arom a). W hen his w ife told him w here to
look and who the m asterm ind of this deed was, he went ballistic
(his wife is in trouble too).
Even though his ad w as an em barrassm ent to m e and my
fam ily, I still feel this w as a great w ay for a friend to rem em ber
his 40th Birthday. And it m ade him fam ous in som e circles!
M y sincere apologies to the H eppner Com m unity for my
frien d ’s skulduggery. But w hat can you expect from som eone
