Chamber Chatter
By Claudia Hughes, Chamber Manager
Since attending the Rural
Futures Forum last month in
Bums with Rollie Marshall, Bob
Jepsen and 28 others from rural
communities similar to Heppner,
I’ve been doing a good deal of
thinking about people, our dif
ferences, likenesses, how we
communicate, relate to others,
what frustrates us and why. Con
sequently, an article passed
across my desk which I’d like to
share during this Christmas
season and year round.
Attitude - by Charles Sw indoll
' The longer I live, the more I
realize the impact of attitude on
life. Attitude, to me, is more im
portant than facts. It is more im
portant than the past, than educa
tion, than money, than cir
cumstances, than failures, than
successes, than what other peo
ple think or say or do. It is more
important than appearance,
giftedness or skill. It will make
or break a company, a church, a
home. The remarkable thing is
we have a choice every day regar
ding the attitude we will embrace
for that day. We cannot change
our past, we cannot change the
fact that people will act in a cer
tain way. We cannot change the
inevitable. The only thing we can
do is play on the one string we
have, and that is our attitude. I am
convinced that life is 10 percent
what happens to me and 90 per
cent how I react to it. And so it
is with you, we are in charge of
our attitudes.
Now, the hard part, improving
our attitude. New Year's resolu
tion time is just around the cor
ner, let’s go for it.
Sparkling Christmas lights are
twinkling everywhere, remember
to have them turned on for the
Heppner Chamber of Commerce
lighting contest. Judges will be
checking them out between Dec.
17 and 20. The chamber ap
preciates the beautiful tree for
Main Street donated by Margot
Dubuque.
Looking ahead: Dec. 23,
Chamber business meeting; Dec.
30, no chamber, fifth Wednes
day; January 6, 1993-installation
of officers during Chamber lun
cheon; Jan. 13-annual Town and
Country day, luncheon buffet
with speakers from the Sagebrush
Coalition. Town and Country
theme is "Rural Folks Working
Together".
Take time to enjoy the Advent
season in preparation for
celebrating the 12 days of
Christmas.
Cranberries an
American
tradition
"Cranberries are an American
tradition," says Carol Michael-
Bennett, OSU extension home
economist in Morrow County.
Long before the pilgrims, Indians
were crushing these bright red
berries with dried deer meat and
melted fat to make pemmican.
Oregon’s cranberry production
ranks fourth in the nation behind
Massachusetts, Wisconsin and
New Jersey. These brightly col
ored berries thrive in the long,
cool growing seasons of coastal
Oregon.
Oregon's crop currently goes to
processors who make products
such as juice and sauce.
The fresh cranberries available
in supermarkets during the holi
day season come from out of state
(especially Washington and
Massachusetts). Look for plump,
firm berries that are bright and
shiny when you buy them.
For best quality, use
refrigerated cranberries within a
month. For longer storage, you
can freeze them right in the bag
or in the freezer container. When
ready to use, wash and sort out
soft berries and stems.
Cranberries are low in calories
(50 calories per cup) and a source
of vitamin C, says Carolyn Raab.
OSU extension foods and nutri
tion specialist.
This versatile fruit can be us
ed in pies, muffins, puddings and
quick breads. For example, com
bine cranberries with chopped
fresh or dried sweet fruits (ap
ples, apricots) for pie fillings. Or
chop lightly sweetened berries (U
cup sugar to one cup cranberries)
to your favorite muffin recipe.

I would like to thank my dance
students for performing their first
Christmas program. It was
beautiful and I know they work
ed very hard and did a magnifi-
cant job. Thank you also to Lea
Calvert and Judy Aaron who
coordinated the refreshments,
were wonderful hostesses and
added the special touches, the
Lexington Oddfellows Lodge, the
Lexington Baptist Church and
school district as well as private
citizens for lending chairs and to
all the mothers of my students for
baking the goodies. The flowers,
gifts and cards were deeply ap
preciated. I feel very fortunate to
have such wonderful students to
teach.

I would like to express my
gratitude to the parents, fans and
supporters of Heppner High
School’s football team. The
generosity and enthusiasm of the
community in support of the team
was phenomenal. From Warren-
ton to Corvallis, Mustang Mania
was evident. There are no better
supporters in this state.
These young people provided
all of us with a season full of ex
citem ent with their ac
complishments, and in doing so,
will leave a memory that will
become sweeter with the years.
So many people have helped this
moment come about that. I feel
compelled to pay tribute to them.
To all parents-thank you for your
love, time and support. To the
fans-you are the best. (Never be
surprised by the power of positive
thinking.) To the following peo
ple for their time and support:
(please forgive me because so
meone will be left out). Thank
you: to Larry Mills for your drive
and will to get the job done. To
George Koffler for taking the
trouble to write about kids so they
will have something to read with
pride, and look back on with fond
memories. To the Booster Club
for all the wonderful things you
have done. To Kinzua Corp., the
Bank of Eastern Oregon, Morrow
County Grain Growers and Col
umbia Basin Electric Co-op,
along with a multitude of
businesses and individuals who
have contributed to making this
such a special experience for all
involved.
These young men proved that
anything can be done if you work
together, believe in each other
and work hard. With your con
tinued support many more great
things will be done.
Sincerely,
Greg Grant
