Red Ribbon week sends
anti-drug message
Why do Heppner and Oregon
Together celebrate Red Ribbon
Week October 24 through
November 1? The Red Ribbon
campaign originated when FBI
agent Enrique Camarena was
murdered by drug traffickers in
1985. The Red Ribbon became
the symbol to reduce the demand
for drugs, just as the yellow' rib
bon symbolized the hostages in
Tran crisis and later our support
for our troops in the Gulf. The
1992 slogan is “ Drug Free and
P roud” and the theme is
“ Neighbor by Neighbor. Ribbon
by Ribbon. We are United for
Drug (and alcohol) Free Youth” .
The Red Ribbon symbolizes a
commitment to a drug free,
neaithy lifestyle, no use of any il
legal drug and no illegal use of
drugs and alcohol and no harm
ful use of any legal dntg or
substance.
"the goal of this year’s cam
paign is to present a unified and
visible commitment toward the
creation of a drug free America
by changing society’s permissive
attitude towards drugs and
alcohol to one where drug use is
viewed
as
absolutely
unacceptable.
i ne Oregon Together grouy in
vites your personal commitment
to a drug free America by proud
ly wearing and displaying Red
Ribbons during Red Ribbon
week, Oct. 24-Nov. 1.
