School begins Aug. 31
Yes, it’s true. Summer vaca
tion is coming to an end. the new
school year begins August 31 for
all students in kindergarten
through 12th grade, except the
kindergarten Blue class which
begins September 1.
The district welcomes all
newcomers to the community and
schools. Students new to Hepp
ner in grades kindergarten
through eight should stop by the
elementary school office between
8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to register.
This can be done any day of the
week up to the beginning of
school. You should bring your
child's birth certificate, im
munization record, and social
security number.
Class lists for grades K through
sixth have been posted at the
elem entary school office.
Students in seventh and eighth
grade can pick up their schedule
at the school office on or before
the first day of school. Seventh
and eighth graders will not be
assigned to a homeroom as in the
past. Kindergarten students are
assigned to two groups, Red and
Blue. Each group will attending
school all day from 8 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. on the designated days. The
Red class will attend on all Mon
days, Thursdays, and every other
Wednesday. The Blue class will
attend on all Tuesdays. Fridays,
and every other Wednesday. To
help keep this straight a weekly,
monthly and yearly calendar will
be provided to each family. The
school staff hopes this new
schedule will result in more in
structional time for the students.
School fees can be paid before
school begins or during the first
few weeks of school. The fees are
as follow: insurance is optional,
cost varies; towel fee-$2 for
grades 6 through 8; student body
fee-$4 for grades 5 through 8.
Lunch and breakfast prices are
the same as last year: breakfast
is 50 cents, lunch is 75 cents for
K through 6 and $1 for grades 7
and 8. Milk is 20 cents.
This year the middle school
will dismiss at 3:15 p.m. instead
of 3:30 p.m. The busses will also
run at that time. All bus students
will be dismissed from the
buildings at 3:15 to load the
busses. The busses will depart at
3:20 for the high school. Students
who do not ride busses will be
dismissed as follows: K-2, 2:30
p.m.; third and fourth graders at
3 p.m.; fifth through eighth at
3:15 p.m.
Two additions to Heppner
Elementary this year will be a
half-time Chapter One program
taught by Barbara Orwick and a
half-time sixth grade teacher. The
Chapter One program provides
additional help for students in
math, reading and language arts
Vicki Broden will be the half-time
sixth grade teacher. “ She is an
experienced
and
skilled
ed u ca to r,” said Heppner
Elementary School principal
Bryan Traylor. “ We are pleased
and fortunate to have both addi
tions.”
“ This school year promises to
be both challenging and rewar
ding for all involved,” continued
Traylor. “ We wouldn’t have it
any other way. It is our goal to
work with the parents and com
munity to provide the best possi
ble education for our children.
Remember. “ Our nation’s future
is in school today.”
Chamber ‘adopts’ Main Street

a Street” program.
