Suzanne Lee completed a two
week arts in education residency
at the lone Elementary School
during April. Ms. Lee lives in
Portland and is one of 20 artists
available for school residencies in
the state.
She specializes in soft
sculpture, banners and silk
screening. She instructed lone
students in basic design and each
child silk-screened a T-shirt.

ference track meet convincingly,
scoring 104 points. Du fur finish
ed second with 69. The girls
finished fourth with 56. Weston-
McEwen won the meet with 85
points.
Heading into this weekend’s
district meet in Hermiston, Gabe
Garcia and Deacon Heideman
continued to dominate their
events. Garcia ran 23.43 to take
the 200 and then doubled back
with a 52.89 winning effort in the
400 meters. He also ran anchor
on the winning 1600 relay team.

The 400-relay team suffered a
setback when they ran out of the
exchange zone on the first han-
doff and later dropped the baton.
Heideman got off a season best
and a new school record with a
throw of the discus 146’5” to win
that event. He also won the 110
hurdles in 16.06 and finished fifth
in the high jump in 5’4” .
Ryan Halvorsen provided the
Cardinals the only other win on
the day, placing first with a jump
of 39’ 414 ” . Halvorsen also plac
ed fourth in the 300 hurdles,
45.72.
Justin Miller scaled a season
best in the pole vault clearing
l l ’O” to finish second.
Other finishers for the Cards
were: Jake Deputy with a high
jump of 5’4” for sixth; Mike
Garrett put the shot 42’414” for
third place and placed sixth in the
300 hurdles with a time of46.49.
He also threw the javelin
136’5‘/ i” for fifth place.
Jason Proudfoot ran the 1500
in 4:39.34 for fourth and the 800
in 2:18.54 for sixth.
Mac Lovett placed third in the
100, 11.66 while David
Wagenblast placed fourth in the
800, 2:14.17 and sixth in the
discus, 109’5 ‘4 ” .
Mike Phillips ran the 3000.
On the girls side of the meet,
Danielle Stefani established
herself as a contender in both the
1500 and 3000, winning both
events and outrunning several ex
perienced state runners. Her time
in the 1500 was 5:20.09 and in
the 3000 she set a new school
record in 11:44.74.
Janie Cupps finished third in
the high jump in 4’10” ; fifth in
the 300 hurdles in 56.61 and sixth
in the 100 hurdles in 19.56. April
Taylor ran 2:43.25 in the 800,
good for fourth and picked up
another fourth in the javelin in
83’10” .
Rounding out the scoring was
Jamie Lovett, fifth in the discus
in 91 ’3Vi” ; Kari Morgan fourth
in the 100 hurdles in 19.42; Kim
Bedortha, fifth in the 1500 in
6:18.11; and Crystal Minster,
sixth in the triple jump in 30’0” .
The Cardinals are off to the
district meet at Hermiston High
School this weekend. Events start
at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 15 and
12 p.m. on Saturday, May 16.
The top two placers from each
event will qualify for the newly-
divided State Class 1A meet to be
held the following weekend at
Western Oregon State College in
Monmouth. The meet will be
held in conjunction with the State
Class 2A meet. This is the first
time that the OSAA has sanction
ed a separate 1A meet.
St. Judge Bike-
a-thon planned

The annual lone St. Jude Bike-
a-thon is scheduled for this Sun
day. May 17 with registration to
begin at 12:30 p.m. Two courses
are available. “ Youngsters” will
ride a circuit route in lone and
“ oldsters” will travel the 22
scenic miles between Ruggs and
lone. Participants may register at
either site and transportation will
be available to Ruggs riders
registering in lone. The ride will
start at 1 p.m. in both places.
Pickups will monitor the Ruggs
riders and walkers and bike riders
will monitor the group in town.
All contestants will finish at the
lone City Park where the usual
photos and refeshments will be
available to all. Return transpor
tation to Ruggs will be available
to those leaving their vehicles
there. Collection envelopes may
be picked up at the park at the
conclusion of the ride.
Pledge sheets for the bike-a-
thon are still available at area
businesses. For further informa
