Cardinals disappointed at tennis meet lone tennis

The lone tennis teams played
at Umatilla on April 21 in a tour­
nament of sorts, where points
were awarded for each win and
points were totaled to determine
a winner. When the dust settled,
the Cardinals found themselves a
disappointing two points from the
first place trophy.
Nancy Morter won two mat­
ches, first defeating Ana Garcia
of Mac Hi, 8-2, then downing
Missy Stuck of Umatilla, 8-3.
Kristine Bedortha lost her opener
to Umatilla’s Shauna Fry, 5-8,
but returned for a 2-1 forfeit win
over Andrea W imberly of
Umatilla.
In doubles, Brandi Ball and
Amy Pointer took both of their
matches. To start play, they
defeated Winn and Schnell of
Mac Hi 8-1, then came back to
down Nelson and Gibson of
Umatilla 8-4. Michelle Kandle
and Jessica Stefani lost their
opener in a tie breaker, 9-8 (7-5)
over Simpson and Sheffield of
Umatilla. They then returned to
defeat Oliver and White of Mac
Hi 8-1.
The boys had a tougher time,
only winning one match. Tony
Bjerke lost to Alberto Ortenblad
of Mac Hi 1-8, then fell to Neal
DeBolt of Arlington, 3-8. Mike
Green lost to Steve Paine of Mac
Hi, 1-8, and was then defeated by
Jim Logan of Arlington 5-8.
In doubles, Juho Ali-
Raatikainen and Aaron Heideman
lost their opener to Zerba and
Nelson of Mac Hi 2-8, but then
rebounded to defeat Foster and
Escobedo of Arlington 8-2.
M ustangs sweep double header

The Heppner Mustangs took
advantage of 24 Pilot Rock walks
on Saturday, April 25 to sweep
a double header.
Jered Wicklund took the
mound for the first game and pit­
ched five innings, striking out
eight batters. The Mustangs held
the Rockets to just one run, for­
cing the 10 run mercy rule 11 to
one. The Mustangs combined for
five hits.
The second half o f the
doubleheader was pretty much
the same story except it took six
innings for the mercy rule.
Jim Tellechea took the win pit­
ching all six innings, striking out
eight batters and giving up one
run. Heppner scrambled for
seven hits, led by Kevin Payne
with two The Mustangs stomped
the Rockets, 11 to one and sent
the winless Rockets home.
lon e track teams outscore opponents

Both track teams outscored
their opponents at their only meet
last week, a four-way meet held
at Heppner on Tuesday, April 28.
Deacon Heideman and Gabe
Garcia were double winners for
the boys, as the Cardinals were
on their way to scoring 150
points. Heideman won the discus
in 129' 11” and the 110 hurdles
in 17.10. He also placed second
in the shot with a throw of
38’9 ‘/ i ” and third in the high
jump at 5’8” .
Garcia led an lone sweep in the
100 and 200 m with times of
11.65 and 24.07 respectively as
well as running legs on the win­
ning 400 and 1600 relay teams.
Other first place finishers for
the Cards were Mike Garrett in
the shot, putting it 39’9” ; Rodney
Ehrmantraut in the 400 m, 1:08;
David Wagenblast in the 800 m,
2:20.24 and Ryan Halvorsen in
the 300 hurdles 49.74.
Wagenblast also finished se­
cond in the discus, 106’11 Vi” .
Halvorsen finished second in
the long jump and triple jump,
18* 1134 ” and 39’7” respective­
ly and second in the 110 hurdles

Jason Proudfoot placed third in
the long jump, 18'2Vi” while
Greg Holtz finished fifth.

Greg Holtz triple jumped his
way to fifth place 33’6” . He plac­
ed fourth in the 100 meter with
a ttime of 12.38 and fourth in the
200 m. 26.82.
Mike Garrett came in second in
the javelin with a throw of
137’5” while Brian Holtz plac­
ed fifth. 115’'/t” .
Jake Deputy placed fourth in
the high jump, 5’2” and second
in the 300 hurdles with a time of
51.45.
Fifth in the high jump was
Justin Miller, 5’2” .
Mike Phillips placed second in
the 1500 m clocking4:53.55; and
second in the 3000 m, 10:44.76.
Second in the 100 m was Mac
Lovett with a time of 11.78.
Lovett also placed second in the
200 m, 24.7.
Heath Cotterell was second
with a time of 1:10.41 in the 400
m and ran in the 3000 with a
12.12.23 finish.
Jim Garrett ran to a time of
1:15.59 in the 400 m, and in the
3000 clocked in at 12.06.69.
Nathan Heideman ran the 800
m in 2:31.69, good for third
place.
For the girls, Janie Cupps was
a double winner, taking the high
jump in 4 '6 ” and the 300 hurdles
in 57.45. Other first place
finishers were Kari Morgan in the
javelin 77’ 1 Vi ” , Jamie Lovett in
the discus with a throw of 89'3”
and Danielle Stefani in the 800
meters in 3:36.91. The girls also
won their portion of the meet with
69 points.
Other placers for the Lady
Cards included:
April Taylor, second in the
javelin, 76'2” and second in the
400 m 1:13.
Randi Wise fourth in the
javelin 72'2” and fifth in the 100
m. 17.01.
Lovett also placed fifth in the
javelin, 69’6” and third in the
shot 26'5Vi” while Morgan plac­
ed second in the shot 27’6 Vi” and
third in the 100 hurdles 19.59.
Becky Picknell put the shot
25’1” for fifth place.
Tanya Anderson threw the
discus for a second place finish
with a throw of 74’7” .
Kim Bedortha ran the 1500 m
in 6:49.2 for a second place finish
along with a fourth place triple
jump 23’9” and second place
3000 15.04.71.
Danielle Stefani placed second
in the 100, 14.51 while Janie
Cupps came in second in the 100
hurdles, 19.57.

Dracula” , a musical, will be
presented by the Heppner Junior
High Chorus on Friday, May 8
at 7:30 p.m. at the Heppner

The lone netters batted their
way through another busy week
of tennis hosting Stanfield on
Tuesday, April 21 and traveling
to Riverside on Friday and
Umatilla on Saturday.
The boys had two wins and
three losses against Stanfield. In
singles, Brent Sheirbon defeated
David Martinez 6-2, 6-1 and
Tony Bjerke downed Howard
Swanson 8-3. Juho Ali-Raatkinen
was defeated by Brad Butcher in
a close one, 9-7.
In doubles, Ali-Raatiken and
Aaron Heideman lost to Butcher
and Swanson 2-8 and Mike Green
and Jerry Phillips fell to Ron
Ough and Geoff Newman 6-8.
The girls had just two matches.
Heidi Orem defeated Shellic
Allen 6-3, 6-2 and Michelle Kan­
dle was defeated by Ali
Ellenberger 6-8.
At Riverside the boys went 5-2
in their matches while the girl’s
split 3-3.
Brent Sheirbon led the way for
the boys with an 8-0 shut-out of
Ken Mounts. Aaron Heideman
also won his match. 8-0 against
Paul McDonough and Jerry
Phillips defeated Allan Day 8-4.
Tony Bjerke was defeated by Seth
Smythe 4-8 and Mike Green fell
to Levi Cumbie, 6-8. In doubles,
Juho AliRaatiknen and Heideman
defeated Jeremy Coster and
Adam Keizur 8-6 and Green and
Phillips downed Tim Mann and
Robert Allison 8-3.
For the girls, Nancy Morter
defeated Bernice Diaz, 8-4 and
Brandi Ball downed Priscilla Tip­
pett 8-5. Kristine Bedortha was
defeated by Tiffany Dumler, 3-8.
In doubles, Amy Pointer and Ball
defeated Rochelle Neal and
Dorothy Sinor 8-6. Heidi Orem
and Michelle Kandle lost a
squeaker to Andrea Cumby and
Amie Keizur, 7-9. Finally
Bridget McElligott and Jessica
Stefani lost to Mindy Heady and

Mustangs lose
to Stanfield

The Mustangs baselball played
the Stanfield Tigers on Mustang
turf April 21 and lost three to one.
Jim Kindle pitched the game
for the Mustangs, striking out 10
batters and giving up three runs.
Heppner hitters combined for
three. Jason Britt hit two and Jim
Tellechea one. The Mustangs led
the game two to one until Stan­
field hit a two-run home run to
win the game.

meet Monday, May 11 at 8 p.m.
at the Heppner Masonic Hall. All
members are encouraged to at­
