Ione Cardinals track team improves lone Boys track team wins two;
girls compete in meets

The lone track teams improv
ed on their season opening per
formances this past week with
outings at a three-way meet in
Umatilla on Tuesday, April 7 and
the competitive Cherry Festival
Invitational in The Dalles on
Saturday, April 11.
At Umatilla, the Cardinal boys
grabbed 11 firsts on their way to
winning the meet with 96 points.
Heppner was second with 53 and
Umatilla had 26. Gabe Garcia
paced the team with wins in the
100 m 11.68, and 200 24.19, plus
legs on both winning relays.

two meets this last week, starting
with a five-way meet at Umatilla
on Tuesday, April 14 and ending
with a win over 28 other schools
at Saturday’s Condon Invita
tional. The girls were second at
Umatilla and finished ninth as a
team at the competitive Condon

Gabe Garcia was a double win
ner for the Cardinals at Umatilla.
He won the 100 and 200 meters

lone tennis teams compete

The lone Tennis teams had
separate events for boys and girls
this week. The girls hosted Con
don Tuesday afternoon April 14
and the boys traveled to the Helix
Tournament on Saturday, April
18. Highlights of the week in
cluded a near sweep of Condon
by the Lady Cards and a fourth
place finish for the doubles team
of Juho Ali-Raatikainen and
Aaron Heideman at Helix.
Nancy Morter led the way for
lone with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jen
nifer Greiner. Kristine Bedortha
lost in a tie-breaker to Christie
Nation 6-4, 7-6, 7-2 in one of the
best matches of the year. Heidi
Orem rounded out the single’s ac

In doubles, Brandi Ball and
Amy Pointer were forced into a
tie-breaker to defeat Lushena

Sherman County. They then
came back to down Brannon and
West of Mac Hi and ended the

Brogotti of Helix.
In other action, Mike Green
and Jerry Phillips lost to Swan
son and Butcher of Stanfield, then
fell to Foster and Escibido of

and Boardman in pre-season

The Mustangs headed to
Pendleton on April 2 to play the
Pendleton JV baseball team.
Heppner’s Jim Kindle started on
the mound, but had a tough time
at the start of the game. After giv
ing up three runs in the first inn
ing, Kindle threw three shutout
innings. Scott Coe and Chris
Dickenson combined for the fifth
inning and Jim Tellechea finish
ed out the game on the mound.
Heppner combined for three hits,
two by Jim Kindle and one by Jeff
Boteftihr. The young Mustangs
were out hit by the hard hitting
Bucks losing 6-2.
The Mustangs traveled to
Boardman on April 7 for a dou
ble header against the Riverside
Pirates. Jim Kindle started on the
mound giving up just two runs in
five innings. Chris Dickenson
and Jim Tellechea finished out the
game pitching. In the sixth inn
ing the Mustangs were up 6-2 but
Riverside went on a rally, tying
the game and forcing an extra in
ning. Riverside won by one run.

seven hits in their victory.
Mustangs take second place
in Grant Union tournament

The Mustangs traveled to John
Day for a three day baseball tour
nament March 26, 27 and 28.
The first day the Mustangs played
Monroe, winning by a score of
one to 0. Jered Wicklund went
the distance on the mound giving
up just two hits. The Mustangs
combined for one hit by Scott
Coe.
The second game of the tour
nament Heppner played Seaside
and won the game in five innings
12-2. Jim Kindle went the
distance on the mound, giving up
four hits. Heppner combined for
10 hits led by Kindle. Coe, Jason

off another baseball season

County for some preseason ac
tion. The Mustangs played a
tough game, losing by one run
with a score of 3-2. Scott Coe
started on the mound throwing
two innings, followed by Jered
Wicklund throwing three. Senior
Jim Kindle threw the last inning.
The young Mustang team com
bined for three hits. Jim
Tellechea led with two and Kin
dle had the other.
On March 20 the Mustangs
traveled to Umatilla for a game
with the Vikings. Jered Wicklund
started on the mound throwing
two and one-third innings. Scott
Coe relieved Wicklund until the
bottom of the sixth inning when
Jim Kindle took over. The
Mustangs combined for 11 hits,
led by Rick Koffler with three
and Kindle with two in a 10-5
loss.
