Shannahan wins dog trials second year
Pat Shannahan and his dog
Tony of Napa, Idaho, took first
place out of 22 teams competing
in the open class sheep dog trials
held at the Morrow County
Fairgrounds during St. Patrick’s
weekend in Heppner.
Shannahan, who also took first
in last year’s competition, won a
trophy and $225 for accumulating
170 points.
Second in the open class for
$150 was Michelle Weitz with
her dog, Taff, from Boise. Idaho.
They earned 167 points.
A close third with 166 points
was Joe Roe and his dog, Shep,
from Twin Falls, ID.
Debbie Peterson and Roy from
Caldwell, ID captured first with
120 points in the pro-novice class
out of 20 teams.
Pat Shannahan with Spud,
belonging to Bob Schiller, took
second in pro-novice with 112
points. Bill Allison and Meg of
Junction City were third with 108
points.
Ruth Lake and her dog Jinx, of
Lebanon were first in the novice
division with 71 points. Dick
Walton and Nell of Moxee, WA
were second with 51 points and
Ken Robinson and Gizmo of Scio
were third with 35. Eight par­
ticipated in the novice event.
Walton was last year’s novice
winner.

Lutheran Church will hold Satur­
day Sunday School for the youth
and their friends of the congrega­
tion. Valby is located 16V4 miles
out o f lone on the Ione-
Gooseberry road.
The day will begin at 10 a.m.
with singing, led by Martha
Peterson and Rikka Tews pianist.
There will also be a special
presentation of the first Easter,
along with arts and crafts.
“ This is a fine education pro­
gram for the youth of the church
and visitors and friends are most
welcome to come and join in the
festivities,” said the Rev. Stan
Hoobing.

Judge was Robert Apleebee of
Lebanon, winner of last year’s
pro-novice class. Course director
was Cliff Steelman of Oregon Ci­
ty. Steelman, a past judge, has
helped with the trials every year
and organized the first one.
The yearling sheep, “ the finest
trial sheep in Oregon,” according
to trial participants, were provid­
ed by Krebs Ranches.

Lenten services at Hope, Valby Finances workshop planned March 30
Mid week Lenten services con­
tinue at both Valby and Hope
Lutheran congregations. This
week the theme is on “ The
Mouth of Christ to Speak God’s
W ord,” based on scripture
reading of St. Luke 4:14-22a.
Prior to the Wednesday even­
ing service at Valby Lutheran
Church, the lone Youth Group
will serve hot potatoes and share
some of their experiences feeding
and serving the needs of residents
o f Burnside in downtown
Portland. The potato feed starts
at 6 p.m. A free will offering will
be taken for the ministry projects
of the lone Youth Group. The
mid week worship service will
follow the hot potato feed.
Thursday evening March 19,

gather at 6 p.m. for a soup and
sandwich supper in the church
