W orkshop set on new tax system
A free workshop to help
answer some basic questions
about taxes, government services
and fundamentals of Oregon’s
new tax system will be offered on
Thursday, March 5, 1992. The
workshop, sponsored by Oregon
State University Extension Ser
vice, will be conducted from 2-4
p.m. at Stokes Landing Center,
195 W. Opal Place, Irrigon, and
will be repeated at 7 p.m. at the
Heppner Elementary School
auditorium.
The workshop will be con
ducted by Bruce Weber, an OSU
Extension economist and staff
member of the OSU program for
Governmental Research and
Education. Topics will include:
how property tax bills are com
puted, how assessments are deter
mined and what you can do if you
don’t think your assessment is
fair; and how Oregon’s state and
local governments are responding
to Measure 5. Citizens are invited
to bring their property tax bills to
the workshop and use their per
sonal data to work through some
sample calculations.

bill is a great educational oppor
tunity,” says Carol Bennett,

terested citizens to participate in
the workshop and increase their
knowledge o f how Oregon
finances schools, local and state

Sheriffs deputies and reserves
met state and county re
quirements in a shoot at the Balm
Fork Range recently.
Nineteen people shot at least 80
percent accuracy on the shooting
range, surpassing the state re
quirements of 70 percent, said
Morrow County Sheriff Roy
Drago. The county requires 80
percent accuracy. Drago said that
tests are conducted four times a
year.

1992 session in Pendleton.
The card party for March 7 was
announced. The lodge accepted
State President Mena Fish’s re
quest for her official visit Oct. 15.
A surprise birthday cake for
Bob Taylor was served. The
Oddfellows held their regular
meeting at the same time and en
joyed the social hour.

home in Alaska after several days
spent with her mother, Leila
Palmer. She also visited her
grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Ken
neth Marshall at Selah, WA.

The Morrow County Historical
Society is again planning their an
nual trip. This year’s trip will be
by Mid-Columbia bus from Con
don May 1, 2 and 3. Travelers
will go to Port Townsend, WA
and Sequim WA.
The bus will leave Heppner at
6 a.m. and pick up passengers in
Lexington and lone. A continen
tal breakfast will be served at a
rest area and then, on to Portland
and north.
Lunch will be served on the
way. There will be a welcome at
the visitors center in Port Town
send before arriving at Harbor-
side Inn where there are reserva
tions for two nights. Saturday
promises to be a busy day with
tours of old homes and historical
points of interest before leaving
for Sequim.
A picnic lunch will be at the
Olympic Game Farm. The bus
will drive through and travelers
can see elk, bison, zebra, moose
and other game birds and
animals. Another point of interest
is a John Wayne Marina where
there is a large inventory of John
Wayne memorabilia and a gift
shop. Dinner will be at the 3
Crabs restaurant which looks out
over the Straits of Juan de Fuca.
Other things are planned to fill the
day.
Sunday breakfast will be serv
ed at the Manrisa Castle, built in
1892, which has an interesting
history.
