Mustangs beat Stanfield claim 3rd
By Jeremy Maddern
The Heppner Mustangs played
the Stanfield Tigers Saturday,
Feb 15 in hopes of a win to claim
third place in the Columbia Basin
Conference. The Mustangs got
their wish as they beat the Tigers
65-55 and combined with a Pilot
Rock loss, the Mustangs jumped
into third place.
Heppner came out in the first
quarter hoping to jump to an early
lead, but saw themselves down by
two points. The Mustangs
erupted for 24 points in the se
cond quarter and they were up
34-24 at the half. The Mustangs
came out flat in the third quarter
though and saw their lead
evaporate to three points going
into the fourth quarter.
Heppner had an awesome
fourth quarter, scoring 23 points
as they cruised to an impressive
win.
Ryan Currin led the Mustangs

Saturday, Feb. 15, the Lady
Cards faced Dufur, the team who
will also be their first-round op
ponent in the district tournament.
With some powerful defense the
Cards were able to keep the
Rangers out of their game. The
game was close in the first quarter
where the Lady Cardinals led
14-10. But the Cards kept the
Rangers from scoring in the se
cond quarter and again in the
fourth on their way to the 45-18
victory.
Kari Morgan led the scoring at
tack with 19 points, followed by
Nancy Morter with 12. Morgan
and Janie Cupps each had eight
rebounds to lead the Cards to a
lopsided rebounding advantage,
29-16. Nancy Morter once again
led with three assists and six
steals.
Neither team put a lot of shots
in the air. The Lady Cards shot
37 times, making 17 for 45 per
cent. Dufur made just four of
their 30 shots in the game.
Coach Heideman was not real
ly happy about the low number
of shots taken, but as for the
defense, he said, “ You can’t ask
for anything better than that.”
12. Len Brittner provided another
go«xl performance with 11 points.
The Mustangs are now third in
the CBC conference and play a
tough Wasco County Saturday
Feb. 22 for their last home game
