Heppner’s Tony Burt (45) tries for blocked shot.
By Jeremy Maddern
Saturday, Feb. 1 the Mustangs
traveled to The Dalles to take on
the Wahtonka Eagles team, who
has not won a game all year. The
Eagles gave the Mustangs some
problems, though, and fared a lot
better than their first meeting, los
ing by only five, 59-54.
The Mustangs jumped out to an
early seven point lead and look
ed like they were well on their
way to another blowout. The
Eagles paced the Mustangs in the
second quarter and only trailed
31-24 at the half, to the
M ustangs’ surprise.
The
Mustangs seemed to be having
problems shooting the ball in the
second half but still managed to
outscore the Eagles in the third
quarter to increase their lead to
10 going into the fourth quarter.
Heppner came unglued and
saw themselves fighting to keep
their lead in the fourth. The
Eagles kept chipping away at a 17
point lead the Mustangs had built
with a swarming press mainly
because of Mustang turnovers.
The Eagles came within two at
one point of the game but could
not overcome an obvious superior
team. The final score was Hepp
ner 59, Wahtonka 54. Tony Burt
and Jason Britt both led the team
in scoring with 12 each and Ryan
Currin also poured in 11. The
Mustangs are now in fourth place
in CBC action and will take on
Pilot Rock this Friday, Feb. 7, in
what should be an important
league game.
