FIFTEEN - M.C. Fair and Rodeo Supplement to the Heppner Gazette-Times, August 7, 1991
4-H agent offers parents fair words of wisdom
Bill Broderick, 4-H agents, passes
on this story from the Jefferson
County Extension newsletter with
the suggestion it’s good for parents
everywhere.
Anyone who hangs around fairs
has heard the cry of the discouraged
parent, ‘This is the last year we are
going to do this.' Most of us have
said it ourselves once or twice.
Along with the fun and excitement
of fairs, there are pressures for both
parents and kids. We have seen
situations where the parents are tak
ing it much harder than the kids.
I think psychologists would tell us
that winning and losing are impor
tant to everyone. Obviously, people
who lose all the time don’t adjust
well to life’s demands.
But they say those who win all of
the time don't adjust well, either.
Some experience at both winning
and losing is important for each
individual.
I believe winning and losing are
individual things. Through some
combination of experience, environ
ment and maybe heredity, each per
son decides what constitutes victory
or defeat.
Most readers have seen the
youngsters, with the animal at the
bottom of the class, break into a big
smile when presented a white rib
bon. You may have expected to see
disappointment at receiving what
many consider to be third rate prize.
But, He or she felt good about his
or her efforts and the ribbon was
important.
Then, we have seen the boy or girl
in second place frown when receiv
ing a fancy rosette and a blue ribbon.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell the losers
from the winners isn’t it?
Years ago at a county fair a little
girl ran up to tell me ‘I just showed
my lamb and I got a ribbon, and I
show it again this afternoon for
showmanship. ’
I started to ask, ‘what color rib
bon did you get?’ but managed to
hold my tounge. It occurred to me
that the girl was happy with her ef
fort and with her lamb and the color
of the ribbon was not that impor
tant. Besides, it’s none of my
business, it’s her ribbon.
I later learned the little girl’s lamb
was awarded a white ribbon and
stood near the bottom of the class.
But that was the judge’s opinion,
which need not have a big impact on
either the girl or the lamb.
What’s the moral to the story? I
think, as adults, we put too much
emphasis on what color ribbon the
kids receive and tend to emphasis the
results rather than the effort.
The kids develop certain expecta
tions, and as they grow older we see
all sorts of reactions to winning and

losing. Unfortunately, we see all
sorts of reactions from their parents
too.
I'm not saying youngsters should
be satisfied with less than their best
effort, but it's important to keep
things in perspective. We should em
phasize the effort rather than the
result.
So, I guess I'm suggesting that as
we go through this fair season, we
consider our actions and our words
in relations to what the young
showmen are supposed to be learn
ing from their experience.
It won't be easy; but considering
the pressure and circumstances. I
think we parents do a remarkably
good job of keeping our heads on
straight.
