Lady Cards end summer
basketball season
I
By Anne Morter
The lone girls’ summer basketball
season came to a close over the
weekend, at least temporarily. The
Lady Cardinals had one last busy
week of playing ball before getting
down to the serious business of sum
mer vacation.
On Tuesday, the Lady Cardinals
traveled to Hermiston where they
lost 61-31. They rallied on Thurs
day, to defeat visiting Heppner,
48-28. On Saturday, they competed
at an eight-team tournament at Sher
man County High School, where
they won one game easily and lost
two squeakers. The games were
played in two 20 minute halves, with
no limit on personal or team fouls.
This led to some near free-for-alls in
the close games.
The first game was an easy 31-15
win over The Dalles. Coach Dana
Heideman reported that the girls
played well in that game, having
their opponent down 18-1 at one
point. Nancy Morter and Kari
Morgan shared high point honors
Around 50 area kids age three through sixth grade attend
ed the week-long Bible school held at the First Christian Church
in Heppner last week. Some of the children made candles as
part of their craft time. The Bible school was jointly sponsored
by the First Christian Church, Christian Life Center and
Nazarene Churches.

The next game was a 30-33 loss
to Goldendale, WA. Goldendale
took advantage of the foul situation
and kept the Cards from shooting by
liberally fouling. All but two girls
scored in that match with Brandi Ball
topping the bunch with eight points.
The Cardinals then met Sherman
County for third place. In a game
where an old animosities bubbled
close to the surface, the fouls got
slightly out of hand, making for a
rough and wild match-up. Sherman
held a two-point edge with just
seconds to go when Nancy Morter
stole the ball, ran the length of the
floor and swished what appeared to
be the game-tying three point shot.
As it was, her foot slipped across the
line at the last second, making the
basket good for just two. The final
score was 28-27 in Sherman’s favor.
Coach Heideman described the game
as “ a fiasco’’ and said that his team
really lost the game at the free throw
line, where they were only able to
capitalize on 10 of 26 attempts.
