Letters to the Editor
Contributions demonstrate belief in
young people
To the Editor:
The bad news is that the cost of
a college or technical education is
rising rapidly and such an education
has never been more needed. The
good news is that the residents and
friends of Morrow County, especial
ly in Heppner, continue to give
generous financial support to their
graduating seniors. This year a total
of 48 awards were given to the
graduating class of Heppner High
School. All but five of those awards
came from the community.
1 would like to acknowledge those
individuals, businesses, friends and
groups who have given time and
resources to help our youth. These
are the American Legion Auxiliary
of Heppner, Heppner Boosters Club,
Heppner Elks Lodge, Heppner Lions

Earning the dollars to maintain a
scholarship fund often takes a lot of
hard work This effort demonstrates
your belief in our youth. As I work
ed with the seniors this year I felt
your time and effort was well spent.
These young people will become the
future workers and leaders in our
communities. Several of them hope
to return to small communities vhen
they have com pleted their
educations.
Education past high school is ex
pensive and can become discourag
ing to fund. Through membership in
various organizations and through
memorials you have made further
education of our young people a
priority. The number of Heppner
High School graduates who further
their education and succeed con
tinues to be high. Through your hard
work and contributions you have
been a part of their success.
Sincerely,

And the Supreme Court of the United States, conservative element in
charge, said sorry, we won’t even hear your second writ, you get one and
that’s all.
Now I understand that it’s the conservatives that agree with that. And
if you disagree, like I did, you’re supposed to be a liberal. Well, how about
that. When it comes to an individual’s right to be free from oppressive
government I find, after all these years, that I’m a bleeding liberal. On
that issue, I’m so liberal I make the most Democrat of Democrats look
like mishy mashy moderates.
I’m first in line to punish the guilty. But doggone, I hate to think of
society killing an innocent man. The old adage that it’s better to turn a
100 guilty men free than to punish one innocent one certainly has some
basis for thought.
Well, you can imagine my chagrin this morning to discover that I’m
pretty liberal on this one issue. I’m beginning to worry that if I’m not what
I seem on this issue, could there be others?
Could I be liberal on child care? Social Security? the homeless? Could
it be that part of the time I’m conservative and part of the time I’m liberal
so that you’d really call me conservative? It’s hell to be 50 and not even
know how you feel about things.

Once in a while a fella finds out som-
thing about himself that is a real sur
prise. You’d think that after 50 years,
you’d know yourself pretty well. You
know what makes you mad, you know
what makes you laugh. If you think
about it a little bit, you know how you
feel about things. You know if you
believe in God, and if so, what it is you
believe about God.
After being married to the same
woman for 25 years, you have a pretty
good idea about how you feel about
her. And raising a couple of kids until
they’re about to fly the coop, you have
a pretty good idea about how you feel
about them, too.
And if you’re like me, you think about government quite a bit. So much
so that you’ve pretty well decided what it is you think and feel about the
things government does. And what it doesn’t do and ought to do and such
like that.
For those of us who have made up their minds about what government
ought to do and not do, there’s labels to describe those decisions. On the
one hand there’s conservatives. That describes folks who think govern
ment ought to sit back and let the people do things for themselves where
they can. And then there’s liberals. They think government ought to jump
in and take care of the people in every way, from cradle to grave.
Then, of course, there’s moderates. Some say those are the folks who
hold views somewhere in between the conservatives and the liberals. I
sometimes think that moderates are those folks who can’t make up their
minds about what they think.
Well, anyway, long ago I decided I was a conservative. Dyed-in-the-
wool, hard case conservative. I don’t want government doing anything
that private folks can do for themselves. And taxes, boy I’m death on taxes.
I want government to squeeze every nickel ‘till the—well, you know.
I even joined the Republican Party because they said that’s where the
conservatives go.
Well, blow me away. I was reading the paper this morning and found
out I’ve got a big wide liberal streak running right through my mid-section.
You see, I was reading about a recent Supreme Court decision that says
a criminal defendant, convicted of murder and sentenced to death cannot
raise the issue of government misconduct in a second Writ of Habeas Cor
pus. Here’s the case: This fella is convicted of murder at a trial in which
the key witness lies. He’s sentenced to die. On appeal he cannot raise the
issue of the witness lying because you can’t challenge the jury’s finding
of fact on appeal.
After the appeal, he files the first writ and claims the witness lied. The
court said “ Well, that was for the jury to figure out.” After the first writ
is heard he first learns that not only did the witness lie, but the prosecutor
(the government man in this case) knew he was going to lie and in fact
encouraged him to do so.
So, the fella files the second writ. Now understand, if this key witness
had told the truth, it looks like the guv really wasn’t even anywhere about,
which is what he claims.
