Erika Bergstrom competes in Tennis

The lone tennis teams played two
matches last week, hosting Condon
on Tuesday, April 16, and traveling
to Stanfield on Saturday, April 20.
The girls went 3-3 against Condon
while the boys were not able to win
either of their matches that day.
Heidi Orem was the only singles’
winner for lone on Tuesday as she
bested Nichole Wilson, 8-0. Nancy
Morter fell to Shandie Johnson, 1-8.
Kari Morgan lost to Jennifer Bird,
5-8, and Kristine Bedortha was
defeated by Jennifer Griener, 6-8.
In doubles' play, Nancy Morter
teamed up with Kristine Bedortha to
defeat Amanda Smith and Christy
Nation, 8-0. Erika Bergstrom and
Heidi Orem followed their lead,
downing Minda Ment and Lushena
Cook, 8-2.
In boys’ action, Condon had only

one player but he played two mat
ches and won both. Condon’s Joe
Claughton downed Tony Bjerke,
3-8, and came back to defeat Aaron
Heideman 3-8.
On Saturday, the Cards faced a
small Stanfield squad. The girls had
only two matches, the boys three.
In girls’ play, Nancy Morter
defeated Connie Keltz, 8-3 and
Brandi Ball downed Heather
Ellenberger, 8-3.
On the boys’ side Brent Sheirbon
treated the spectators to a cliff
hanger. He started out leading the
match, 3-0. His opponent Terry
McCann came back to lead, 7-4.
Sheirbon dug deep, shut McCann
down and pulled out a 9-7 victory.
In other games, Stanfield’s Brad
Butcher defeated Mike Green, 8-0
and Brett Butcher and Howard
Swanson downed Aaron Heideman
and Brent Sheirbon, 8-1.

work on the Rock Creek Watersh
ed, have released a draft copy of
their plan. The basin-wide improve
ment plan is part of a grassroots ef
fort involving local producers
throughout the watershed. Identified
improvements can be implemented
through continued active local sup
port and in working closely with the
local SWCDs.
Copies of the draft have been sent
to all landowners in the watershed
and federal, state and local agencies.
Anyone interested in a copy may
contact any of the three SWCD
offices.
Written comments on the draft
will be accepted until May 3. A
public meeting to discuss comments
is scheduled for May 1 at 7 p.m. at
Memorial Hall in Condon. A final
copy of the plan will be released
May 22.

lone long jumpers compete at BMCC

Several lone tracksters set new
personal bests and Deacon
Heideman and Gabe G arcia
established district leading marks in
their two meets held last week.
On Tuesday, April 16, the Car
dinals and Helix hosted a meet at the
Blue Mountain Community College,
lone placed fourth with 79V4 points,
in boys competition, well behind the
winner, Hermiston with 189 points.
The lone girls were third with 56
points, behind Weston-McEwen
with 124 and Hermiston JV with
121 .
Gabe Garcia was a double winner
for the Cards, taking the 400 in 54.7
and the 200 in 24.73. Other first-
place finishers were Mac Lovett in
the 100, and Justin Miller in the high
jump 5’6” and the 400 relay team.
Miller was also third in the 100
meters. Deacon Heideman placed
fourth in the javelin with a throw of
117’ and tied for fifth in the high
jump. Ryan Halvorsen grabbed
fourth in the triple jump with a leap
of 37’ and was fifth in the long jump
at 17’9Vi” . Jake Deputy was fourth

For the girls, Crystal Minster
placed second in the long jump
13’8” , third in the 100 14.47 and
fourth in the triple jump 28’3” and
in the 200 29.97. Janie Cupps was
second in the high jump a t4 ’6” . She
also ran to a second place finish in
the 400, 72.64 and third in the 300
hurdles 59.7. April Taylor rounded
out the scoring with two third-place
finishes in the 400, 72.85 and the
800, 2:49.6.
On Saturday, the Cardinals travel
ed to Wahtonka for the Sherman
County Invitational. The boys scored
50 Vi points to place fourth and the
girls were in sixth place with 35
points.
Gabe Garcia was the only first
place finisher for lone, winning the
400 meters in 53.76, establishing a
new personal best and district best.
He was also third in the 200 at
24.39. Deacon Heideman improved
his mark in the discus by a whopp
ing 20 feet, throwing 115M/i ” . TTiis
second place throw was not only a
personal best but also another
district-leading mark. Heideman also
placed fifth in the shot with a throw
of 36" 11 V i” , a personal record by
1V4 feet. Ryan Halvorsen establish
ed a new personal best in the triple
jump, leaping 37’11'4” , good for
second place and Mike Garrett was
second in the javelin with a throw of
134’ 10*4” , David Wagenblast
lowered his 800-meters time to
2:14.2, a two-second improvement
and good for fourth place. Brian
Holtz was sixth in the 200, running
26.19 to establish a new personal
record. The 400-relay team of Gabe
G arcia, Justin M iller, Ryan
Halvorsen and Brian Holtz sprinted
to a time of 48.08 and a fourth-place
finish.
The girls competed without Janie
Cupps who missed the meet because
of illness. Crystal Minster had a
busy day finishing second in the 200,
29.09, third in the long jump
13’8W” , fourth in the 100 meters
13.99 and fifth in the triple jump
28'8” . Her long jump and triple
jump marks were new personal
records. Wendy Anderson threw the
shot 31’ 1” for third place and toss
ed the discus 71*7** for sixth place.
April Taylor ran a 2:45.18 in the
800. good for second place.
