St. Patrick was no fool, you know.
His day (is it the anniversary of his
birth, or his death?) is a great time for
a celebration.
March.
Not yet spring enough to be spring,
but too late to really be winter either.
In fact, winter is nearly over. The snow
is gone, the lake has begun to thaw and
some really early plants are beginning
to grow. Winter is definitely over.
But spring has not sprung yet.
There’s still a little frost in the morn
B\ Ed Glenn
ings and a jacket feels comfortable
against the breeze. You see, March is
absolutely perfect and St. Patrick knew
that.
Earlier would be too soon. It takes awhile to get over the doldrums of
winter. Folks are afraid to leave the house with a big fire in the stove and
a drip at the faucet. Roads are dangerous and well, winter is just the time
to stay close to home.
Later would be no good either. Well into spring, the planting work keeps
everyone pretty busy. And what time there is to play is spent visiting the
old summer haunts to make sure they survived the winter.
So the time is right for a celebration.
St. Patrick was pretty smart in picking the Irish to be the patron saint
of too. The Irish need a March celebration. They take the winter harder
than some other folks, mainly because winters are harder in Ireland than
say, Morocco. I’ve never heard of the patron saint of Moroccans, do they
even have one?
Anri Irishmen need a jump start into spring too. Spring comes pretty
suddenly in Ireland and it doesn’t last long so the Irish are pretty busy
in Ireland before the summer is on them. They don’t have time to celebrate
in the spring in Ireland, although that doesn’t really stop them.
And of course, St. Patrick’s favorite color is green. Green is the color
of the spring fields. The color of the new life that will come with spring.
Green is the color of Ireland in the spring so St. Patrick’s color had to
be green. Imagine a purple shamrock.
Of course, St. Patrick adopted the leprechauns I told you he was no
fool. A real saint needs a whole army of helpers especially if he’s the patron
saint of the Irish. Maybe the patron saint of Bolivia doesn’t need
leprechauns, but St. Patrick adopted them for good reason, the Irish need
lots of patronage and they help a lot.
With this no-nonsense saint, his green color, his army of leprechauns
and the Irish to look after, it is no wonder that they found that special
clover that grows shamrocks. The whole lot needs a bit o ’good luck. By
the way, is a real shamrock a four-leafed clover or will the three-leafed
variety do? I was never lucky enough to know for sure. I have found a
few four-leafed ones but they never brought me any good luck. Maybe
I'm not Irish after all.
So here it is, winter over, spring not here yet and we need a celebra
tion. Before the stew is served, before the music starts, before the bed
race is called, we should stop and ponder just how smart old St. Patrick
really is. We should think about his color, and his leprechauns and the
shamrocks. We should remember all the Irish in Ireland and in Heppner.
We should congratulate each other on being just a little Irish.
Above all, we should savor the celebration carefully tucked in between
winter and spring and glory in the scheme of things.
Now that that is taken care of, pass the green beer, please.

Senators unwilling to lead flag salute
Capitol each day for session. Isn’t it
sad there weren’t enough senators
willing to lead the flag salute to keep
the honor among themselves? It’s ig

humiliating.
Our troops in the Gulf are giving
their time, and some their lives, to

Salem area vets and their auxiliaries
for taking advantage of this privilege

Letters to the Editor
To the Editor:
The Oregon House of Represen
tatives for years has opened their
daily session with a flag salute led
by their members. Not so in the
Oregon Senate. Do these senators
find Old Glory to be so disgraceful
that they cannot take a turn to lead
the pledge of allegiance?
A veterans' group in the Salem
area, when made aware of this situa
tion, discovered the leadership
would allow a flag salute if someone
else would come and lead it. They
seized the opportunity to daily lead
the flag salute in the senate.
The senators are already at the
