The Fillies moved to 5-2 in league
and 7-8 overall for the season los
ing one and winning one over the
weekend. In Friday’s match, Jan. 25
the Fillies lost to Weston-McEwen
29-37. Weston-McEwens team has
two players at 6 ’ 1 ” and two players
at 5’ 11” . The Fillies had to work
harder for their rebounds and they
did. Weston-McEwen out rebound
ed the Fillies by only three. In the
first quarter the Fillies were behind
by only two points, but couldn’t
catch up in the second quarter fall
ing further behind. They couldn’t
shut down the offensive as Weston-
McEwen shot to a 17-point lead.
In the second half the Fillies
fought back but just couldn’t catch
the Tiger-Scots, losing 29-37. Nikki
Brisbois led the Fillies with 11 points
and Amy Greenup threw in nine.
“ Even though we had problems in
the second quarter we played
trem endous defense. W eston-
McEwen usually scores a lot
higher,” stated coach Mark Dowdy.
Saturday, playing in front of a
wound-up home crowd, the Fillies
took off in a very fast-paced first
quarter beating Wahtonka 56-48.
Leading from the start and runn
ing fast breaks they streaked ahead
to lead, 15-9 at the quarter.
In the second quarter Wahtonka
got aggressive and with 5:38 left, the
score was tied at 17 points. In the re
maining five minutes, Wahtonka’s
Jeannie Benson sank two three-
pointers to lead at the half 22-29.
Coming back in the second half
the Fillies worked on shutting out
Benson, in the meantime, running
their offense to try and catch up.
With 2:07 left, the Fillies pulled
ahead to lead, 33-31. The Fillies
stole the ball, went down and got
fouled. They led at the end of the
third quarter, 35-33.
In the fourth quarter the Fillies
kept shooting to try to stay ahead,
while The Dalles tried to get Benson
open to shoot some more three-
pointers. Wahtonka took the lead by
one point with only five minutes left
in the game. The Fillies, however,
working as a team, couldn’t be
stopped as they pulled ahead and
kept the lead winning the game,
56-48.
The Fillies high scorers were all
in double figures with Holly Eckman
leading with 16 points. Nikki
Brisbois scored 15 for the Fillies and
Amy Greenup sank 12 points.
The Fillies next league game is
Feb. 1 at home against Pilot Rock.

The Jim West Ranch on Rhea
Creek served as the backdrop for a
feature in the January issue of Na
tional Geographic. Jim and Carleen
West are quick to point out that the
article was about Duff Severe,
renowned Pendleton saddlemaker,
and that their ranch was simply an
acceptable western location for Na
tional Geographic to shoot the
photos.
The article on Severe was among
a series of features on National
Heritage Fellows, a recognition pro
gram sponsored by the National En
dowment for Arts which recognizes
"exceptional artists who preserve
the traditions in which thev are
masters.”
The National Geographic staff was
so impressed with Wests’ ranch that
they sent a video team out in
September to shoot footage for

The lone Lady Cardinals chalked
up two wins last weekend, defeating
a scrappy Helix squad on Friday and
upsetting the Sherman County
Huskies with a last second three-
point shot on Saturday. The wins
moved their league mark to 4-2 and
their season record to 10-5.
On Friday, the Helix Grizzlies
stayed close in the first half, trailing
by only four points at halftime, but
the Lady Cards broke the game open
in the second half, outscoring them,
30-9, and holding the Grizzlies
scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Nancy Morter was the game's top
scorer with 12 points, followed by
Kari Morgan with 10. The Cards
held the rebounding edge, outboar-
ding their opponents, 47-42. Wen
dy Anderson led the way with 12

the ball, tallying only 15 turnovers
compared to 28 for Helix. The Lady
Cards were cold from the floor, hit
ting just 21 of 72 shots for 29 per
cent. The Grizzlies were colder, as
they shot just 18 percent, making
nine of 49. The Cards hit five of 13
for 38 percent from the free throw
line while Helix was three of 10 for
30 percent.
Coach Dana Heideman noted that
Helix had improved since the last
time the teams met, but were play
ing without the services of their
leading scorer which hurt them. He
commended Wendy Anderson for a
good job on the boards in the game.
