Fillies take win over Wasco; now 4-1 Lady Cards lose to Wheeler

Coming back from their loss to
Stanfield the Fillies who were in
jured were suited up and appeared
ready to play Wasco County Satur
day night, Jan. 19 in Heppner
The entire game was very slow
paced which seemed to frustrate the
Fillies. The Fillies, however, had to
make a fourth quarter comeback to
beat the Redsides 27-25.
Wasco County scored the first
basket of the game and their tight in
side defense made it very tough for
the Fillies to shoot. The Fillies final
ly attempted some shots from outside
and connected on two to end the
quarter 4-8.
The second quarter was long and
disastrous with the Fillies trying to
shoot but unable to connect. At half
time they still had not scored and
were behind by 10 points with a
score of 14-4.
Coming back from halftime Hepp
ner decided to change the game. The
Fillies started out playing man to
man which created some turnovers
and picked up the temp of the game.
With four minutes left in the third
quarter, the Fillies scored two
baskets in a row for a score of 10-20.
When time ran out the Fillies made
14 and Wasco 22.
In the final quarter the Fillies
pushed to make a comeback. Both
teams had five team fouls with 6:31
minutes left and score of 16-23. Less

than a minute later the Fillies scored
again and Wasco led by five points.
Nikki Brisbois connected and the
Fillies were behind by only three.
With 3:26 left. Heather Eckman was
fouled and sank one at the charity
stripe and tied the score 23. Both
teams were fouling alot but Wasco
wasn't making any points at the foul
line, a big relief for the Fillies as
they pulled ahead with a little more
than a minute left. The Fillies held
on to win, 27-25.
Nikki Brisbois led the Fillies with
11 points and eight rebounds.
Heather Eckman had seven points
and also pulled down eight boards
while Amy Greenup chipped in
seven points and six rebounds.
“ We’ll take the win,” stated
coach Dowdy. “ Our defense final
ly created offense so we could come
from behind. This was a tough
game. Wasco always plays a slower-
paced game and the injuries on our
team have weakened us a little.” The
Fillies are 4-1 in league play and 6-7
overall.
The next game will be in Athena
against Weston-McEwen on January
25 and at home against Wahtonka
Jan. 26.

Tracie Geer was the game’s high
scorer with 20 points. The teams had
34 rebounds each. Wendy Anderson
paced the Lady Cards with 12 boards
and Kari Morgan added seven. Nan
cy Morter dished out four assists and
nabbed five steals to lead those
categories.
The Lady Cards had a good
shooting night, hitting 21 of 44 for
48 percent from the field and 6-7 for
86 percent from the foul line.
Wheeler had an off night, making
just 21 of 78 from the floor for 27
percent. Things were better at the
free throw line where they shot 12
of 18 for 67 percent.
A ccording to coach Dana
Heideman, bad passes cost lone the
game, noting that the Lady Cards
racked up 35 turnovers. “ Our inex
perience showed," said Heideman.
“ They anticipate the ball really
well.” He commented that his team
“ played in streaks.” He said that the
Cardinals would be outplaying

The lone Lady Cardinals came
close but just couldn't get past the
tenacious Wheeler Falcons last Fri
day night, losing 60-49 in a hard
fought battle. The Falcons, ranked
number two in the last Class 1A poll,
got an early jump on the Lady
Cards, forcing them to play catch up
for most of the game. lone's league
record dropped to 2-2, with their
season mark at 8-5.
Wheeler pounced early, leading
17-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Cards mustered some
momentum in the second quarter to
score 18 points and pull within seven
at the half, 26-33. lone got to within
two points in the third quarter and
again to within three with less than
a minute to go in the game but
Wheeler’s experience showed as
they pulled away in the final
seconds.
Nancy Morter was the leading
Cardinal scorer with 16 points,
followed by Kari Morgan with 15

Bob Krein makes layin
The Mustangs muscled their way
to a hard fought 76-63 victory at
home Saturday night against a tough
Wasco County Redside basketball
team.
Going into the contest, both teams
were tied in the CBC with 3-1 league
marks so the victory was a big one
for the Mustangs. It kept the
Mustangs fighting for the top spot in
the CBC with the Umatilla Vikings.
Both teams have only one loss in
league play and are knotted at the top
of the standings. Three other teams
are within one game of the top.
The Mustangs used a strong se
cond half effort to subdue the stub
born Redsides. Heppner scored 46
points in the second half to pull away
from Wasco County in a game that
was much closer than the final score
indicated.
The Mustangs stormed into the
lead, outscoring Wasco County
19-11 in the first period. Starters
Brandon Pedro and Jason Britt both
picked up their second fouls with the
game only four minutes old. They
both sat out the rest of the half and
the Redsides used a patient attack,
beating the press, to lead at the half,
33-30.
Point guard Bob Krein sparked the
Mustangs with four baskets in the
third period with slicing drives to the
hoop.
Ron Haguewood
shoots perfect 25
Morrow County Gun Club reports
that the first perfect 25 for the season
was shot by Ron Haguewood. He
bested 24 other shooters in the
16-yard competition.
Jeff Cutsforth posted a lone 23
from the 24-yard line to capture the
handicap high-score position.

The 'Annie Oakley' game was
shot as the last event of the day. with
all participants enjoying a good time.
The club will open early, at 10
a m. on Sunday, Jan 27 for those
who wish to post their scores prior
to kickoff of the Super Bowl.
Wheeler and then mentally collapse,
allowing the Falcons to open up a 10
point lead. Despite the loss,
Heideman was happy with the effort.
“ We’re making good progress. I
was happy with the way we played, ’ ’
he said. He commended Wendy
Anderson for a good game, making
two of three shots from the floor,
two of two from the line and pulling
down 12 rebounds. He said that
Nancy Morter did a good job, mak
ing seven of 10 from the field, as did
Kari Morgan and Brandi Ball, who
both hit six of 12 from the floor.
Next weekend, the Cards face
Helix on Friday and Sherman Coun
ty on Saturday. While the Helix
game is not a given by any means,
the critical game will be against the
tall Sherman County Huskies, who
currently lead the West Division of
the Big Sky League. A win over
Sherman would pave the way for a
favorable seeding at the district tour
nament. Both games will be played
in lone.
Brandon Pedro finally got untrack
ed and scored eight points in the
fourth quarter as the Mustangs pull
ed away in the last three minutes for
the win.
The Heppner attack was as balanc
ed as it has been all season. Eight
players had from six to 13 points for
the evening.
Rick Osmin led Heppner with 13
points. Krein and Pedro each added
12 points and Rick Koffler had 10
points, all in the first half.
With the Mustangs in foul trouble,
Ryan Currin and Charlie Rathbun
each came off the bench with six
points and four rebounds in reserve
roles.
Pedro and Doug Devin led Hepp
ner on the boards with eight and
seven respectively.
Scott Lacey, a 6’3” junior for the
Redsides led all scorers with 22
points. Kawika Wilcox, their senior
floor leader, added 15 and Chad
Dodge had 10.
The Mustangs travel to Athena
Friday night to take on the Weston-
McEwen Tiger-Scots in a crucial
league contest before returning home
Saturday to host the Wahtonka
Eagles.
