Roby C. Chappell
Graveside services for Roby C.
Chappell were held at Hillview
Cemetery in lone, Dec. 1, 1990.
Chappell, 73, died Thursday,
Nov. 29, 1990 at Pioneer Memorial
Hospital in Heppner
He was bom June 7, 1917, in
Woodland to Thomas and Effie
Farmer Chappell. He married Ethel
Hill on Aug. 13, 1935 in Woodland
and moved to Oregon in 1942.
Chappell lived in the Con
don/ Spray. Heppner area. Following
his retirement form the State
Highway Department in 1980 he liv
ed in lone.
He enjoyed tending his fruit and
vegetable garden; it was his favorite
hobby.
Survivors include his wife, at the
home and his sister Pauline Gates,
lone.
Sweeney Mortuary, Heppner, was
in charge of arrangements.
Charles H. Willis
Family services were held for
Charles H. Willis and private inter
ment was at the Irrigon Cemetery.
Willis, a resident of the Ir-
ngon/Boardman area since 1974
died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 1990, at
the Good Shepherd Hospital in Her-
miston. He was bom in Atwood,
Kan., on May 2, 1920, to Blanche
and William Willis.
He grew up in Oklahoma and
moved to the West coast in 1939. He
worked as a pipe fitter/welder for 45
years, belonging to local No. 290 of
Portland.
He married Grace Ellen Turnbull
on Feb. 14, 1948, in Benton City,
Wash. During their marriage of 42
years they lived in California, Idaho,
Washington and Oregon. He dairy
farmed many of those years and rais
ed quarter horses in retirement.
They moved to Pahramp, Nev.,
where he loved the sunshine and
heat. After he was diagnosed with
cancer in June of 1989 they moved
back to their home in Boardman to
be near their family.
Survivors include his wife at the
home; son James of Clatskanie,
three daughters, Charlotte Verley of
Irrigon; Susan DeVries and Mary
Reed both of Tillamook; five
brothers and sisters, Jual Coates,
Bud Willis and Norma Smith, all of
Benton City, and Dorotha Muir and
Jerry Willis of Anchorage, Alaska;
and 13 grandchildren.

Donald C. Smith
Donald C. Smith, 42, Heppner,
died at Pioneer Memorial Hospital
in Heppner on Saturday, Dec. 1,
1990. At Mr. Smith’s request there
will be no funeral services.
He was bom July 9, 1948 at
Portland to Henry and Minnie
Smith. He grew up in the Portland
area and attended schools there.
During the Vietnam War, he serv
ed with the U.S. Marine Corps.
On April 3, 1989, he married Car
man Harpenau at Vancouver, WA.
The couple moved to Heppner from
Monument earlier this year.
Survivors include his wife at the
home; son, David of Pendleton;
father, Henry Smith of Lake
Oswego; sister. Joan Blizzard of
Lake Oswego.
Sweeney Mortuary, Heppner, was
in charge of arrangements.
