Nearly 24 percent of all American
homes rely on septic systems to treat
and dispose o f household
wastewater. Government regulations
make sure that these systems meet
certain standards so that when they
are properly designed and installed,
they are environmentally safe, ac
cording to water quality experts.
The most important factor in keep
ing a septic system operating proper
ly is homeowner maintenance, so it’s
important to know the basic com
ponents of the system and how to
keep them functioning properly.
Septic systems have two key
elements—a septic tank and an ab
sorption system. The septic tank is
usually a concrete container, sized
to suit your home needs, that
receives wastewater from your
bathroom, kitchen and laundry
room. It allows heavy particles
(sludge) to settle and light materials
(scum) to float, so that bacteria in
wastewater between them can li
quefy the waste products.
The absorption system, or drain-
field, consists of a distribution box,
perforated distribution lines made of
tile and a soil area that has the
capacity to accept wastewater. This
system receives wastewater from the
septic tank and removes harmful,
disease causing microorganisms,
organics and nutrients.
A few common sense precautions
should keep your septic system
working well over a long period of
time, according to Carol Bennett.
Morrow County Extension agent.
It’s important to know the loca
tions of all the parts of your system
and to keep heavy vehicles away
from them. Also, avoid planting
trees or shrubs near drain tiles—their
roots can clog drain lines.
Be careful of what you dispose of
in the toilet or in your drains.
Household chemicals can destroy the
bacteria in your septic tank. Garbage
disposals can add unnecessary solids
and grease to your system, and it is
necessary to pump the tank much
more frequently.
Conserve water whenever possi
ble and try to distribute
laundry
and other chores that require water
use throughout the week to avoid
overloading your system on any par
ticular day.

W eather service seeks area
weather spotters
Have you ever seen an unusual
weather event and wondered if there
was someone to whom you could
have reported it? Do you find
weather interesting and fascinating?
Do you have some w eather
instruments?
If your answer to any of the above
questions is yes, you could be a
weatehr “ spotter” for the National
Weather Service. This government
agency, which is part of the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Ad
ministration (NOAA), is looking for
such people.
A weather spotter is given a series
of criteria which are used as
guidelines in reporting severe
weather such as tornadoes, funnel
clouds, hail, strong winds, snow and
freezing rain.
Information from spotters, coupl
ed with radar, satellite and other
data, has enabled the National
Westher Service to issue more time
ly and accurate warnings for severe
weather.
Anyone interested in becoming a
weather “ spotter” may write to:
D isaster
P reparedness
Meteorologist, d o National Weather
Service Forecast Office, 5420 N.E.
Marine Drive, Portland, OR 97281.
Include your name, address, phone
number, location from nearest town,
whether you have weather in
struments and experience in obser
ving the weather.
Any information about spotters
will not be given to outside sources,
unless authorized by the spotter.
News releases or special weather
statements issued by the National
W eather Service may include
weather information such as, “ A
spotter northeast of Prineville
reported one-inch hail this after
noon.”
Weather spotters are selected on
the basis of location, knowledge of
weather and any available weather
instruments. In some cases spotters
may be provided with a plastic rain
gauge.
Further information about the
spotter network can be obtained by
writing to the above address.
