St. Patrick’s
Senior Center
Bulletin Board
By Jane Rawlins
The new bus did indeed arrive and made its maiden voyage to Fossil last
Thursday evening to the Columbia Basin meeting and dinner. The smooth,
quiet, comfortable ride convinced us that it was worth waiting for. We now
have opportunities for pleasurable, educational, recreational tours about the
country. Ideas for these jaunts are welcome.
Last week those attending the Wednesday meal elected three Senior Center
Board directors to two year terms: Everett Keithley and Bud Batty were
re-elected and John Wood was elected to replace Jane Rawlins.
Last Wednesday the Activities Committee evaluated their 1990 year and
noted their accomplished goals included: catering several meals, starting
a quilting group and an exercise class, monthly potluck parties, serving
breakfast at the fairgrounds and potato soup and pie at the center on St.
Patrick’s weekend, monthly food sales, a pie and ice cream booth at the
county fair, knitting classes, baking potatoes for Cycle III and luncheon
for Wednesday dinner servers from the churches and establishing an area
station for RSVP. The goals the committee then brainstormed for 1991 in
cluded continuing most of the above and adding: giving public dinners such
as a pancake supper, ‘chicken dumpling' family dinner, a ‘super soup sup
per.' flower arranging classes or group, publication of a booklet of historical
anecdotes, a weekly or monthly movie night in the front room, a drama
group doing skits or a play, bingo, dances, meditation group, giving sug
gestions to the Transportation Committee for use of the new bus (such as
visiting other senior centers, BMCC plays and concerts, Ashland for the
play festival, etc.,) watercolor painting, intergenerational activities with
children and young people, and card parties. Success with these goals will
depend largely on the response and participation of local seniors. This com
mittee merits praise and encouragement for their vision and effort in ex
panding the scope of activities and service offered through this center.
Members are chairperson Shirley Haugen, Daisy Collins. Barbara Jean
Struthers, Theta Lowe, Marilyn Bergstrom, Irene Schroeder. Velma Wight.
Rachel Harnett and Jane Rawlins. Anyone interested in being in this group
is invited to join.
This week: Wednesday servers from the St. Patrick’s church served the
noon Thanksgiving dinner.
Next week: Monday-Quilters and Company at 1 p.m.
Tuesday-Sing Into Shape Exercise group at 10 a.m. Mary Ella Moyer
and friends will be baking in the kitchen for a private sale.
Wednesday-Thanksgiving food sale at 9 a m. in the front room. Noon
dinner menu will be barbecued beef on a bun, corn, fresh vegetable tray,
hot bread and fruit jello. Helpers will come from the Seventh Day Adven
tist and Nazarene Churches. Incedently apologies go to the Latter Day Saints
Church for inadvertently omitting their name in last week's bulletin board.
They have been ever-faithful in helping us.
Thursday Thanksgiving Day there will be no exercise group and our of
fice will be closed. However, a message can be left on our answering
machine.
Two pieces of good news have just come our way; Barbara Jean Struthers
will lend us her piano for the dining room and Shirley Haugen has
volunteered to be another driver for the Dollaride car. Shirley says she can
drive on Fridays and maybe other days too. She can be reached at 676-5352.
“ Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be, the last of life for which
the first was made.” Remember that one?
