Imbler derails Mustang express 28-27

The Heppner Mustangs, needing
a tough game to prepare them for the
remainder of the league season, got
just what they wanted as they ran in
to the Imbler Panthers Friday night
and came out on the short end of a
28-27 score. The Panthers of the
Wapiti League scored last in the
seesaw battle, leaving the Mustangs
season record at five wins and two
losses. They are still a perfect 3-0 in
league play.
The Mustangs, who have been
starting quickly in their last few

games, did it again on this crisp, cool
night, scoring twice in the first
quarter. They drove 89 yards in six
plays to score. Bob Krein, the
Mustangs quarterback, turned the
comer on an option play and outran
the defense, going 61 yards for the
score. Rick Osmin drilled the pat and
it was 7-0 halfway through the first
quarter.
The next time Heppner touched
the ball they scored again. The
11-play drive covering 60 yards took
five minutes. Osmin scooted into the
end zone from seven yards out for
the score. He added the pat. The
Mustangs led 14-0 and some people
thought the rout was on.
The Panthers had other ideas. On
their first drive of the second
quarter, they put the ball in the end
zone. Quarterback Steve Smith
found Jeremy Martinez in the clear
for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Dan
Fine booted the pat and it was 14-7.
Cory Grabeel took the next kickoff
at the 19-yard line, headed up the
middle, cut left and rambled 81
yards for a touchdown. Grabeel, a
senior who scored twice on the
night, has scored in every game he
has played in this year. The pat was
perfect and the Mustangs had a 21-7
lead.
The Panthers, with three good
running, showed their toughness and
determination on the next two
drives. Using a full house backfield
and power and misdirection, they
marched 51 yards in 10 plays with
Fine, a junior running back scoring
on a 15-yard run He kicked the pat
to make it 21-14.
Imbler tied it up with 40 seconds
left in the half on a six-yard blast by
senior Russell McDonald. Fine was
true again and both teams regrouped
with the halftime score, 21-21.
Each team misfired in the third
quarter. Heppner fumbled the ball
away to the Panthers and then Bran
don Pedro intercepted a sideline
pass. Each team punted once and
then Heppner drove for the go ahead
score. Krein, who played his best
game of the year, found Pedro alone
for a 35-yard pass completion. Doug
Devin broke loose on a counter for
a 13-yard gain and then, two plays
into the fourth quarter, Grabeel
scored from the four-yard line to
make it 27-21. The pat was blocked
but an offside penalty gave Heppner
another shot at it. The second pat at
tempt was also blocked and the
Mustangs needed to hold the
Panthers.
After trading possessions, Imbler
took over on their own 49 yard line
with 7:12 left to play. After getting
a first down, and facing a third and
long, quarterback Smith ran a great
bootleg around right end for a 34
yard gain to the Mustang three yard
line. Heppner almost pulled off a
goal line stand, but Fine scored on
third down, kicked the pat and Im
bler led 28-27.
The Mustangs were 60 yards from
paydirt with 3:42 left in the game.
Krein hit Pedro for a 30-yard gain
to the Imbler 30-yard line. After
three running plays, Krein tried his
own bootleg, keeping the drive alive
with a first down.
The Mustangs got six yards closer
on two runs by Osmin. With 48
seconds left the Mustangs lined up
for a 32-yard field goal. Osmin
pushed it just wide left. The Panthers
ran out the clock and came away
with the 28-27 win.
The M ustangs defense was
without the services of Jim Kindle,
out for one week with a sprained
ankle. The defense was anchored by
Devin, junior Jason Britt and Krein.
The defensive line will have to come
to play in the remaining league
games for the Mustangs to reach the
playoffs.
Heppner is still tied with Umatilla
for first place in the Columbia Basin
Conference. The Mustangs travel to
Athena. Friday, October 26, to face
the Weston-McEwen Tiger-Scots at
7:30 p m.
The Mustangs can clinch a spot in
the playoffs with a win. Weston-
McEwen has two league losses, be
ing beaten by both Umatilla and
Wahtonka.
