bombed the Tigers 42-0. The
Mustangs, unveiling a potent pass
ing attack, connected on four
touchdown passes against a very
young but spunky Tiger team.
The Mustangs wasted little time
scoring, when on their second
possession after a bad punt snap,
senior halfback Doug Devin
powered into the end zone from four
yards out. Rick Osmin added the pat
and Heppner led 7-0.
After an exchange of fumbles,
Heppner put the ball into the end
zone on three pass completions.
Brandon Pedro, a senior wideout,
hauled in a Bob Krein pass for the
score. The pat was good and it was
14-0.
With the M ustang defense
blanketing the Tigers, Heppner
scored shortly into the second
quarter on a 19-yard Krein to Ryan
Currin scoring pass.
Just before halftime, Rick Osmin,
seeing his first contact since the first
game of the season, broke loose
around right end for a 41-yard
touchdown run. He added the pat
and the Mustangs went into the
locker room leading 28-0.

The lone Varsity volleyball team
chalked up two in the win column
last week, defeating Helix on the
road on Tuesday and downing
Cascade Locks at home on Friday.
The Lady Cardinals season record
now goes to 6-3 and their league
record stands at 3-2.
Helix gave the Cards a jolt by win
ning the first game of the match,
10-15. According to coach Jocelyn
Jones, her team started off very slow
and Helix took advantage of some
“ incredible luck” with their hits to
win that first game. After that
Helix’s luck ran out and the Lady
Cardinals overcame their frustration
to win the next two games, 15-2,
15-5 and take the match.

On Sept. 25, the Heppner JV and
Varsity Fillies traveled to Dayville.
The Varsity started out hot with six
serves from Nikki Brisbois but were

kicked his sixth pat and the Mustangs
led, 42-0.
Coach Grant played the whole
squad for the last 1 Vt quarters, with
the younger Mustangs getting
valuable experience at the varsity
level.
The defensive charge was led by
Jim Kindle at tackle. Jim blocked a
punt, had several sacks and led a
strong showing by the defensive
team.
The Mustangs moved their record
to 1-0 in league and 3-1 for the
season.
The Pilot Rock Rockets forfeited
their game with the Mustangs this
Friday with Heppner's league record
moving to 2-0.
There will still be a game Friday,
October 5 at the Morrow County
fairgrounds as the Pilot Rock
Rockets junior varsity will come
over and play a non-counting game
against the Mustang junior varsity.

net were Wendy Anderson with four
kills and Brandi Ball with three.
“ We played good team ball once
we got going,” said coach Jones.
“ The match had a very odd start,”
she added.
On Friday night, the Lady Cards
once again started slow and dug
themselves into a big hole before
pulling out to win the match in two
games, 16-14, 15-6.
In the first game, lone was down
3-11 before rallying to the win.
Before regaining their confidence,
the Cardinals had trouble passing
and receiving serves. “ Bad passes
take us out of our game, ’ ’ said coach
Jones. “ We had to regroup and then
we played well after that,” she
commented.
The Lady Cards did have good
consistent serving in the match and
Jones commended Kari Morgan and
Brandi Ball for good play at the net.
The JV team lost in both of their
match-ups last week. At Helix, they
ended up playing the Varsity squad
due to a shortage of players on
Helix’s team and lost, 13-15.
Jones said this was not a bad loss
for them since they were playing the
varsity. On Friday, the girls fell
16-14, 15-13. Once again, they were
matched up with Cascade Locks'
varsity team for the first game of the
match and head coach Jones said
they played “ exceptionally well.”
The Cardinals are on the road this
week traveling to Sherman County
on Thursday and Lyle, Washington
on Friday. Both matches are
non-league.

first JV game made for an easy 15-4
victory. Holly Eckman and Ruth
Norton combined for another 11
points serving five and six
points respectively in the second
game to finish the match with a
15-12 win.
On Oct. 1 Heppner JV and C
teams traveled to Stanfield, winning
in two with strong serving from Hol
ly Eckman and Jodi Johnston. The
JV’s came out on top, 15-13, 15-12.
Coach Pam Dowdy complimented
the team, saying they played one of
their best matches.
The C-team who lost the first
game 15 3 came fighting in the se
cond but still fell short, losing 14-16.
Coach Jeri Grieb said she was pleas
ed with the girls’ team effort and ser
ving from Toni Cutsforth.
