Chamber Chatter
By Claudia Hughes. Chamber Manager
Tune in to Channel 8, KGW,
Portland at 7 p.m. Saturday,
September 22, to follow Cycle
Oregon III across our state. Maybe
you’ll see those hard working Sorop-
timists greeting cyclists all day as
they arrived, or the volunteers for
the Morrow County Tourism Com
mittee serving gatorade, or all those
dedicated shuttle service drivers who
went above and beyond the call of
duty as they logged many miles;
hard on horses and vehicles but I
understand a good time was had by
all.
On or off screen, everyone who
helped in any way on this communi
ty undertaking is a ‘‘star” and a true
‘‘Heppner survivor o f Psycho
Oregon III.” There is still an oppor
tunity to own a survivor T-shirt.
Orders have been coming in from
cyclists. If local people want a shirt,
they are now on sale for $8 at the
Chamber Office (Heppner TV).
Just received a call from a Cor
vallis cyclist who wanted to thank
Heppner for a terrific time and great
hospitality and another message
from Bellevue that Heppner was the
best stop. That’s what we want to
hear.
Time for a new focus...eight
members of the Heppner area
Response Committee for Rural
Economic Development will be
traveling to John Day Friday and
Saturday for a training session for
eastern Oregon com m unities.
Members will be looking to all of
you for input in the planning pro
cess, because a program like this
doesn’t work unless ideas come from
everyone. When people have owner
ship in planning, successful projects
are the result. What do you see for
Heppner down the road? What are
your dreams for your town? What
part would you like to play in the
future of Heppner? What changes
would you like to make? You’ll be
hearing more about this.
See you at Chamber, noon Tues
day. Heppner Elks with a speaker

dent from Switzerland.

Arts & Crafts
meeting set
This month’s Morrow County
Creative Arts and Crafts meeting
will be at Cam Wishart’s home, 140
S. Gilmore, behind the courthouse,
Monday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. for
a potluck dinner.
After the meal and business
meeting Deena Reid will give a
demonstration using Fimo clay.
“ She will be making an assortment
of dolls that make great gifts,” said
a club spokesperson.
The above photograph of Duffy
Nabholtz was incorrectly identified
as Geoff Kronick in the Sept. 12
issue of the Gazette-Times.
Nabholtz, from Dallas, Texas,
was a participant in the Cycle III
bicycle tour passing through Hepp
ner Sunday, Sept. 9.
Kronick was the first bicyclist to
reach Heppner Sunday morning.
Cycle III Heppner coordinator
Claudia Hughes credits the State of
Oregon Tourism Division for much
of the success of the bicycle tour in
Heppner.
Hughes said that a quote attributed
to her in the Sept. 12 issue of the
Gazette-Times, saying ‘‘The state
was no help at all,” was taken out
of context. She said that the state
ment referred only to the state’s role
in food planning.
‘‘The State Tourism Division
brought Cycle Oregon III to Hepp
ner,” said local coordinator Claudia
Hughes. “ The purpose of the event
was to bring 2000 new people to
communities in the hopes of
generating tourism-related dollars
while creating an event that would
entice visitors to return. If it weren’t
for the tourism committee and Cy
cle III Board selecting Heppner as a
host community, this experience
would not have been possible. Dur
ing the entire planning process the
Cycle III staff was a 1-800-CYCLE
Or call way. They had much to learn
about small communities and
answered questions to the best of
their knowledge and experience. The
food catering process was on a first
year trial basis; therefore, there were
no guidelines to follow for food
ordering, cost, quantity, size, etc;
only tight deadlines to be met. It was
in this area only that “ the state was
not much help at all.”
Hughes announces there will be a
follow-up meeting for all committee
heads involved in any way with Cy
cle Oregon III, Monday, September
24 at 5 p.m. at All Saints Parish. At
that time those attending should be
ready to share suggestions for future
communities involved and to offer
comments on the overall feelings of
committee members after Cycle III.
There will be an opportunity at this
meeting to view a video, taped by
Barbara Hayes and Heppner High
students during Cycle Oregon III,
