lone team
starts season
By Anne Morter
A young lone football squad with
just two seniors and improved
quickness, start off their season hop
ing to improve on the 3-6 record of
last year. With 15 boys out for the
team, including eight returning let-
termen, second year coach Greg
Rietmann, feels he may have the
manpower to get the job done.
A welcome addition to the team is
senior transfer. Matt Glimore. At
6 ’4 ” and 190 pounds, he will add
muscle to both the offensive and
defensive
lines.
Senior
fullback/lineback, Jim Holtz at 165
pounds looks good, and junior Gabe
Garcia at 150 pounds should give the
Cardinals speed at the split end
position.
Rietmann plans to run out of the
I formation and estimates that 80
percent of the plays will be on the
ground with the remainder in the air.
He also plans to run three and four
man fronts defensively.
With the Big Sky League weaken
ed by graduation. lone is gunning for
one of two playoff berths. Rietmann
predicts that Sherman County and
Culver, the Cards Friday night foe,
will be the powerful teams to beat.
The Cardinals started their season
last Saturday in Dufur with a four
team jamboree. Portland Lutheran,
Mt. Hood Christian and the host
team, Dufur rounded out the field
where each team played one quarter
against the others.
The Cards first quarter opponent
was Dufur. A quick-out pass from
David W agenblast to Ryan
Halvorsen in the closing seconds
gave lone the 6-0 win. Rietmann said
the team played very well especial
ly considering that it was the first
quareter of the season.
The dreaded first game jitters ar
rived in the second quarter, and
along with a few untimely penalties
added up to a 0-12 loss to Portland
Lutheran. Portland Lutheran scored
first on a pass interception return and
then again on a pass play.
The Cards met Mt. Hood Chris
tian in the third quarter where they
played to a 0-0 tie. Rietmann felt that
Mt. Hood was the best team there,
but excellent play by the lone
defense kept them scoreless. The
Cardinal marched as far as the Mt
Hood one-foot line but were unable
to punch it in, leaving the period
deadlocked.
Rietmann felt the Cardinals ha8 an
overall good performance at the jam
boree. The coaches got to see most
of the boys play and he felt it was
a good way to kick off what he hopes
will be a successful season.
The Cards league opener against
Culver will start Friday at 7:30 p.m.
at home. With Culver being a pro
bable playoff contender, this first
game is an important one for the
Cardinals.
