Record crowd attends PRCA rodeo
Jack McGuire of Boardman cap­
tured the Morrow County Rodeo All
Around title at the local rodeo Fri­
day night, Aug. 17. He took first in
open calf roping and he and Bob
McGuire took first in team roping.
Second in team roping was the
team of Tom Martin, Lexington and
Shad Bishop, Irrigon, and third team
was Bob and Mike Mahoney,
Heppner.
Jerad Eckman was the buckle win­
ner in the calf riding event.
The Kinzua amateur calf roping
saddle winner was Bill Bishop. Bob
Mahoney was second, winning a
pair of boots from Gardners.
Second in open calf roping was
Tony Currin and third was Kyle
Robinson, both of Heppner. Currin
also took first in steer wrestling. Sid
dritt. Echo, was second and Jack
Mcguire, third.
Annie Hisler, Heppner, took first
in pee wee barrels, with Kathleen
Greenup. Heppner. runner up, and
Blake Knowles also of Heppner.
third.
Top in cow riding was Terri Gen­
try, with Larry Palmer coming in
second.
Shanna Rietmann, lone, galloped
to first in the stick horse race, three
and under, with Madison Bailey,
Heppner, second and Devin Doutre.
Pendleton, grandson of Bob and
Sherree Mahoney, third.
Vince Berretta, Heppner, won the
stick horse race, four years old
Shelly Rietmann, lone was second.
Blake Knowles was first in mut­
ton busting with Annie Hisler, se­
cond and Amy Papineau, Lexington,
and Shad Hisler, Heppner, tying for
third.
Joely Williamson, Heppner, took
first in breakaway roping. Terri
Gentry was second and Monte
Johnson, Boardman, third.
In the junior barrels, Kim Burke,
Boardman was first. Tiffany
Munkers and Kelsey Evans, both
Heppner. were second and third,
respectively.
Angie Hughes. Heppner. was first
in senior barrels. Joely Williamson
was second and Libby Britt, Hepp­
ner, third.
First place in team branding held
Thursday night was the team of Bob
Mahoney, Mike Mahoney, both
Heppner. Bob Steagall, Lexington,
and Jeff Biggerstaff, Stanfield.
Fair and Rodeo
A large crowd enjoys Saturday’s rodeo
A record crowd of around 2,000
people attended the Professional
Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo
held Saturday, Aug. 18 in Heppner.
The rodeo, held under clear skies
and beautiful weather and with a
refurbished rodeo arena, was the
first PRCA rodeo held in Heppner
since 1977.
Rain dimished the crowd for Sun­
day's performance, somewhat.
Around 1,200 were estimated to
have attended the PRCA perfor­
mance Sunday, Aug. 19.
The rodeo grounds were refur­
bished to speed up the rodeo events
and accommodate more spectators.
The rodeo purse was $20,000 with
$7,000 contributed by local
businesses.
The rodeo was dedicated to Mike
Currin. rodeo cowboy and son of
Ron and Judy Currin, prominent
rodeo family of Butter Creek, who
died in an airplane crash on Monday.
July 2, 1990, en route to the Ponoka
Stampede, a rodeo in Ponoka,
Alberta, Canada.
Top money maker was Joe
Beaver, past world champion calf
roper from Victoria, Texas, who
won $1.164 with calf roping time of
8.7 He took home the Mike Currin
Memorial buckle which was donated
by local individuals and presented by
C urrin’s widow. Judy Walchli
Currin.
Davey Lowe, of Ogden, Utah,
won the bareback riding with 77 for
$642.53. Butch Knowles of Heppner
was the saddle bronc winner with a
76 for $740.30. Top team ropers
were Wes Moore of Redcrest, Ca.,
and Ricky Green of Valley Spring
Co. with 4.7 for $717.80 each. Mike
Smith was the steer wrestling champ
with 4.1 for $970.18. Top bull rider
w as Gene Bob Palmer of Terrebonne
witha 75 for $768.24 and Christy
Finley was the top barrel racer with
16.42 for $625.16. Bill Bishop won
the Kinzua saddle for the amateur
calf roping event.

St. Anthony terminates PMH contract
St Anthony Hospital in Pendleton
is terminating its management con­
tract with Pioneer M em orial
Hospital in Heppner effective Dec
1, 1990. Jackie Bergstrom. Morrow
County Medical Board Chairman,
told the Gazette-Times Tuesday.
Bergstrom said that St. Anthony
will continue to provide support ser­
vices for PMH and is in the process
of drafting an affiliation agreement
with the board.
Bergstrom said that the Morrow
County Medical Board has offered
the administrative position to Ernest
Wick, current administrator and St
Anthony employee, and negotiations
between Wick and the medical board
are underway.
Bergstrom stressed that "business
will be carried on as usual.” and said
that PMH employees' jobs are ” not
Fairgoers enjoy talent contest
Total gate receipts for the 1990
Morrow County Fair and Rodeo
were up $3,000 over last year, from
$9,500 in 1989 to $12,595, accor­
ding to fair officials.
Opening day receipts, also up,
were $3.310, surpassed only by
Saturday's receipts of $3.463. when
a capacity crowd attended the Pro­
fessional Rodeo Cowboys Associa­
tion Rodeo.
The number of fair exhibitors was
about the same as last year, at 487.
but fair officials said there were
more entries per exhibitor
The Wednesday night talent con­
test was well attended, with warm
daytime temperatures cooling down
for the evening performance
Overall winners of the contest, now
able to compete at the Oregon State
Fair are singers Patty Smith and
Debbie White. Boardman.
Trevor Rhea, five, the son of
Steve and Molly Rhea, won the six
and under contest with his lip sync
of “ Hunka. Hunka Burning Love."
Todd Copcnhaver of Boardman took
first with a lip sync number in
the seven to 12 age group. Kristine
Bedortha. lone, sang for her first
place in the 13 to 17 age group.
Wheat League cake winner was
Linda Morter, lone.
Judges choice went to Shirley
McNary, lone, for her painting
Ida Farra. Heppner, won the
Creative Hands award, as outstan­
ding exhibitor in home economics.
Pat Pettyjohn. lone, took the best of
show in the scarecrow contest and
Kendra Martin won the kids
scarecrow division.
Helen Martin, lone, won the most
blue ribbons and had the most entries
in the flower division.

According to Bergstrom, the
Medical Board was informed of St.
Anthony’s decision on Aug. 20 by
telephone. On Tuesday. Aug 21.
the board received a certified letter
from St. Anthony’s to that effect.
Bergstrom said only that “ St. An­
thony is in the process of reorganiza­
tion and will not be able to provide
management services any longer ”
