PUBLIC NUTICE
Heppner plans for influx of
1,700 during Cycle III
PUBLIC NOTICE
Ten groups in Gilchrist earned over
$900 each by the time the bicycle
tour passed through town, he said.
Gilchrist is a town around half the
size of Heppner.
Gil Ernst
"Expect the worst" and “treat the
people like you would like to be
treated.” was the advice given to
over 50 in attendance at the Cycle
III organizational meeting held Aug.
4 in Heppner.
Gil Ernst, local coordinator for the
event when the cyclists passed
through his town, Gilchrist, during
Cycle II last year, stressed the huge
quantities of food required to feed
those on the bicycling tour. The last
count for those signed up to take this
year’s tour, which passes through
Heppner on Sept. 9 is 1,700. The ci
ty of Heppner has a population of
1,510.
Ernst said that the stores and
restaurants in Gilchrist sold out of
food, and one group selling baked
goods sold over 400 pies and cakes.
Despite the huge influx of people
and confusion, however, Ernst has
nothing but nice things to say about
the 1,800 bicyclists who travled
through his town last year. “These
people are great. They can entertain
themselves,” he said. “If you treat
them like your own, they’ll come
back.”
Volunteers and members of ser
vice organizations, including Hepp
ner Chamber of Commerce manager
Claudia Hughes and Mayor Cara
Costa are in the process of planning
for Cycle III.
Planning committees include:
welcome booth, bike security, home
stay, shuttle buses, entertainment in
formation booths, beer gardens,
events and activities, food-which in
cludes dinner and breakfast for
1,700 and downtown booths. The
majority of the cyclists will stay at
the Elementary school grounds and
the fairgrounds. Dinner will be serv
ed at the school and breakfast at the
city park.
The Gazette-Times is planning a
tab-size publication to welcome the
cyclists and as a souvenir of Cycle
III. The deadline for news and
advertisements for the tab is August
24. “Make a positive impression on
these visitors to Morrow County.”
Harriet Pierson offers Alberta Johannes cookies and punch.
The open house was held on Aug.
3 in celebration of completion of
remodeling of the Bank of Eastern
Oregon.
Remodeling included moving the
teller station, adding three confiden
tial offices for customers, adding a
board room, making space more ef
ficient for five other offices and
completely
repainting
and
recarpeting the bank, said George
Koffler, executive vice president.
