Letters to the Editor
It is time
To the Editor;
In the past few months, 1 have had
the opportunity to attend a few
Timber People rallies. I have notic
ed a spark of determination glowing
at each one. This spark is something
to be cherished and protected, for it
is the same spark that brought the
pioneers across the Mississippi and
across the Great Plains.
This same spark of determination
drove them, with their wagons, their
oxen, and their families, up and over
the Rocky Mountains. It got them
through the sweltering heat of the
desert to the home they later built in
Oregon. This same spark was fann
ed into a flame by the winds of tyran
ny, giving birth to this nation.
This spark of determination needs
great care and must be tended to dai
ly. As anyone can attest who has
ever been caught outside on a cold
and wet autumn evening, it is easier
to start a fire than it is to keep it fed
throughout the night.
It is time for those freedom-loving
people of the wood products industry
to see that this spark grows. It is time
for each one of us to make this a per
sonal fight. Now the hard work
begins. Far too often, worthwhile
causes are started with a large, noisy
fanfare, and then abandoned for an
easier path.
It is time for those of you who
believe that the industry is still
viable, and that we as its workers are
the caretakers of a renewable
resource, to join the fray. It is time
to let those who would dictate how
you live your life know that you are
not going to stand for this in
terference. It is time to tell those out
siders who point the finger of ac
cusation at the people of the Nor
thwest that their hearts should grieve
for what goes on in their own
backyard.
It is time to let this nation know
how important the wood products in
dustry and its workers are...to let
them see that it will not be just the
people of the Northwest who suffer
if this industry falls prey to the
preservationists.
It is time to raise your voices and
to stand side-by-side.. .not only to be
heard, but to be dealt with. It is time
to let these usurpers know that your
cry will not be extinguished, but will
only grow larger and louder if left
unanswered.

OCA candidate produces no gains
To the Editor:
There is some interest in seeing
OCA’s candidate, Alvin Mobley run
for governor.
There are four misconceptions
about this candidacy that need to be
cleared up. First of all, Mobley is
not really an Oregonian. He is a re
cent transplant from Mississippi.
Second, he is not an independent.
He only changed his party registra
tion last February-and that for the
sole purpose of running for gover
nor without having to face a primary
election. This is nothing new. Only
shortly before that, he changed from
Democrat to Republican. I think
that’s rather unstable.
Third, he is not a candidate. He
is only a potential candidate. Legal
ly, he can not file to run until about
the middle of August, because of his
late registration.
Fourth, he has not established any
qualifications for himself. He has no
education or experience in service
that commends him for high public
office.
He is a candidate of convenience-
ideologically pure (because he is
untested), and appears sincere and
well-meaning. But do we not require
more stringent requirements of
public office-holders?
Given these factors, and the fact
that he holds no record of service to
Oregon (either in or out of elective
office) what reason do we have to
believe that he would be a good
public servant? None. Any politician
can talk a good game. Rhetoric is
cheap.
Of course, it is wild conjecture
that asserts that the OCA candidate
could win anyway. This is believed
by nobody, except the strictest sect
of OCA devotees.
The OCA candidacy serves no real
purpose, except to elect the most
liberal of the major party candidates,
Barbara Roberts, and to support
OCA. IF their candidate were to
have a fair showing, I believe that
both major parties would then be
subject to further blackmail by
OCA, who would try to run their
own candidates in ‘92, ‘94, and so
on until the public grows tired of it.
I would encourage Oregonians not
to throw away their votes by suppor
ting a candidacy that will produce no
gains for family values-and may
even cause us to lose ground.
Sincerely,
