Temperatures broke the 100
degree mark last week with the mer­
cury reaching 101 on July 10, 103
on July 11 and 101 again on July 12.
No 100-degree temperatures were
recorded last year, but 102 was
recorded on July 20, 1988 and 100
on June 30 and July 14, 1987.

COUNTY PARKS
Mrs. Beckett, 89, of The Dalles,
formerly of Heppner, died Sunday,
July 15, 1990, at Mid-Columbia
Medical Center in The Dalles.
The funeral for Gladys Beckett
was July 18 at Spencer Libby &
Powell Funeral Home in The Dalles.
Private burial was at the Heppner
Masonic Cemetery.
Mrs. Beckett was bom Nov. 27,
1900, at New Salem, Mo., to Ran­
ey and Florence Whittaker Van
H orn, the youngest of three
daughters.
The family moved to Fossil in
1902.
She married Charles R. Beckett on
Aug. 16, 1918, in Pendleton. They
lived and farmed in the Eight Mile
area near Heppner until 1958 when
they moved into Heppner. Mr.
Beckett died in 1973 and Mrs.
Beckett moved to The Dalles in
1983.
Survivors include daughters, Nor­
ma Jean Johnson of Dufur and
Florence McCarty of Portland; two
granddaughters,
five
great­
grandchildren
and
two
great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the Providence Center Heart
Fund or to a charity of choice,
directly or through Spencer Libby &
Powell, 1100 Kelly Ave., The
Dalles, OR 97508.
He served as mayor of Heppner
from 1973 until 1981.
After his retirement, Mr. Sweeney
moved to Medford and for the last
several months had been at
Milwaukie.
He was a member of St. Patrick's
Catholic Church in Heppner; a life
member of the Disabled American
Veterans, Butte 6, in Butte, Mont.;
a member of BPOE 358 in Heppner;
a member of Knights of Columbus
Council 1594 in Medford; a member
of the Military Order of Purple
Heart; AP1C (American Political
Collectors) and Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 6412 Camp White Post.
Mr. Sweeney still held an OregUh
Funeral Directors and Embalmers
License. He was a past president of
the Oregon State Mortuary and
Cemetery Board, appointed by then
Gov. Tom McCall.
His wife “ Tiny” died in 1975.
Survivors include sons, Michael and
Brian, both of Milwaukie, Patrick
and Gregory, both of Heppner and
Daniel of Hillsboro; a daughter
Kathleen Sunseri of Milwaukie. and
12 grandchildren. A sister Patricia
McLean also died earlier.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the Pioneer Memorial
Hospital Fund, P.O. Box 9, Hepp­
ner, OR 97836.
Sweeney Mortuary, Heppner, was
in charge of arrangements.
The funeral for Andrew "M arsh"
Harrell was Saturday. July 14, in the
chapel at Bums Mortuary in Her­
miston. Burial was at Desert Lawn
Cemetery in Irrigon.
Mr. Harrell, 90, of Irrigon died
Tuesday, July 10, 1990, at Good
Shepherd Community Hospital in
Hermiston.
He was bom June 27, 1990 at Col­
by, Kan.
He came to Oregon in 1941 and
had lived at Irrigon for 38 years. He
retired from Union Pacific Railroad
in 1969 after 30 years service.
He was a 30-year member of the
Hermiston Eagles Lodge 2902; a life
member of the Umatilla Sage
Riders; Union Pacific United Old
Timers; and UTU Local 1574.
Both parks have good clean
restrooms, picnic areas, handi­
capped access, & fishing ponds.

ly 12 at St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church in Heppner. Mass of Chris­
tian Burial was Saturday. July 14 at
the church. Vault interment was at
the Heppner Masonic Cemetery.
Mr. Sweeney, 66, of Milwaukie.
formerly of Heppner, died Wednes
day, July 11, 1990 at the Veterans
Hospital in Portland.
He was bom July 20, 1923. at Red
Lodge, Mont., to Patrick and Mona
Hawes Sweeney. He grew up in
Montana at Red Lodge and Fort
Benton and graduated from high
school at Gonzaga Prep School in
Spokane.
During World War II, he served
with the U.S. Army 102nd Infantry.
On Sept. 20, 1948, he married
O. V. "Tiny” Harris at Butte, Mont.
He attended Gonzaga University,
N orthw estern U niversity and
graduated from Worsham College of
Mortuary Science at Des Plaines, 111,
in 1949.
He worked in Butte, Mont., from
1949 until 1955; at Ontario from
1955 until 1960; at Grants Pass from
1960-1964; and purchased Sweeney
Mortuary in Heppner, which he
operated from 1964 until his retire­
ment in 1983.

Snap Shots

On July 12, Snap Shots Club met
at Kate's Pizza for a photography
meeting at 11 a.m.
Rick Worden and Donnie Pointer
lead the pledges and Sarah Greenup
read the minutes of the past meeting.
Members discussed what photos to
enter for fair and how to mount
them.
Leader, Susie Hisler, helped
members fill out premium sheets and
part of the record books.
One last photo outing is planned
before fair by going to Lake Penland
July 26.
The next meeting is set for Aug.
8 at Kate’s Pizza.

continues to meet Sunday afternoons
at 3 p.m. Remember, only a few
more weeks to fair. Sunday July 29
will be record book review.
Members should bring record books
to the meeting. The registration sheet

Graveside services for Amanda
Lynn Lightle were held Thursday,
July 12, 1990. at the Heppner
Masonic Cemetery.
Amanda was stillborn at St. An­
thony’s Hospital in Pendleton on Ju­
ly 5, 1990. She is survived by her
parents, Cheryl Ripple and Terry
Lightle, sisters, Joanna Welch and
Heather Ripple, all of Heppner and
a brother, Daniel Lightle, of
Hermiston.
Survivors include his wife Emma
"Sally” Harrell, at the home; a
nephew, Dr. Wayne Gossard of
Dallas, Texas, and a niece, Mary
Jane Marks of Colorado Springs,
Colo.
