Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, July 11, 1990 - FIVE
EASTERN OREGON
OUTDOORS
_
h> Mark Bugetl
I don’t know a single angler from age
five to 95 who doesn’t enjoy catching
crappies. And most of the salmon, trout
and steelhead fishermen I’ve talked to-
-regardless how ardent they may be in
their piscatorial pursuit-have admitted
that they actually prefer to eat the
white-meated crappie over their
favorite salmo id species.
That the crappie is so well suited to
the table is but one reason it has gain
ed such popularity among eastern
Oregon’s summertime anglers. Where
they are found, they are usually found by the thousands. This is especially
attractive when fishing with kids, whose enthusiasm span can be measured
in milliseconds when the action is slow, or even for older anglers ^ith
a like amount of patience. Locate a school of active crappies and you can
fill a five-gallon bucket (or two) in no time.
Though it's tough for some to understand, crappies usually need this
kind of fishing pressure. They tend to over-reproduce to make up for high
mortality and, if left unchecked, can quickly overpopulate and become
stunted. Drastic environmental changes can endanger crappie populations,
but sport angling rarely does—especially in larger waters. Take, for in
stance, the Snake River’s Brownlee Reservoir, a favorite crappie hotspot
of anglers from all over the Northwest. A joint study between both Oregon’s
and Idaho’s fish and wildlife departments estimated that anglers took nearly
three million crappies from Brownlee last year, yet each time I visited the
reservoir this spring, my fish finder could not read the bottom in most
areas due to an overwhelming number of suspended crappies.
In the spring, spawning crappies can be ridiculously easy to find and
catch from shallow water near rock, grass or wood structure, but as the
summer sun warms the surface, post-spawn crappies usually retreat to
deeper water. Though this often proves frustrating for anglers used to
fishing the shallow stuff, they needn’t be discouraged; the fish usually aren't
difficult to locate and, once found, are more than willing to bite.
If you know where a lot of spawning activity took place, simply head
straight from there to deeper water. Boaters with depth finders should look
for sharp breaks in the lake bottom’s topography or, better yet, a nearby
submerged creek or river channel. Crappies will often hang suspended
just off the break into deeper water. A favorite trick of mine, once I’ve
located a school of crappie, is to position the boat directly over them and
lower my jig directly under the depth finder’s transducer. Then, when I
turn up the sensitivity on my Eagle LCG (a Z-9000), I can watch the screen
and easily follow the tiniest jig right down to the fish. This pinpoint place
ment allows me to quickly determine which colors or types of jigs the fish
prefer at the moment.
Boaters without sonar units can also find crappies, though with somewhat
more traditional methods. Rare is the occasion when not a breath of air
stirs over most of eastern Oregon’s lakes—usually there is more wind than
we’d like. Simply winddrift heavily weighted jigs over suspected crappie
locations until you catch a fish, then anchor and ply the area with lighter
lures. Bank fishermen also use this fish-locating technique with the aid
of a slip bobber. If there are several anglers in your boat, each should
use a different color at a variety of depths until the crappies are found.
As for color, a good starting point is to match skirt color to water con
ditions. Green or chartreuse seems to work well during a big algae bloom
(such as at Unity Reservoir), while smoke or salt and pepper will take
fish from clear water. In brownish, dirty-water conditions, try very bright
or very dark hues. At any rate, don’t be afraid to experiment-crappies
often will readily hit one color while ignoring all others. So it you buddy
is knocking them dead, don’t hesitate to switch.
