By Anne Morter
The lone tennis teams had a busy
week playing matches against Stan
field on Tuesday, Umatilla on
Thursday and Condon on Saturday.
The Cards had a full slate of
games at Stanfield on Tuesday after
noon. Renee Van Leersum led off
with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over
Yuko Ogino. Linda Morter used
good hard serves to defeat Connie
Keltz, 8-3. Amy Pointer lost to Jen
nifer Davison, 8-5. Kristine Bedor-
tha, in her first taste of singles’ play,
defeated Tomoko Harada and
Fumika Matsui chalked up another
win, defeating Nina Hernandez, 8-2.
Brandi Ball, also playing her first
singles match, won over Nawko
Itirato, 8-4.
In doubles play, Amy Wagenblast
and Nancy Morter lost to Yuko
Ogino and Connie Keltz, 6-8, but
Brandi Ball and Kari Morgan played
a tough match to defeat Jennifer
Davison and Tomoko Harada, 9-8.
On the boy’s side, wins were
harder to come by as they lost all
their singles' matches. Brent Sheir-
bon lost to David Martinez, 4-6, 5-7.
Eric Orem lost to Terry McCann,
4-6, 5-7, and Jason Schneider fell to
Brad Butcher, 0-8. ]n doubles ac
tion, Eric Orem and Jason Schneider
overpowered Stanfield’s doubles’
team of Eric Lemmon and Ben
Bergstrom. 8-1.

against visiting Umatilla. Renee Van
Leersum started off by beating Mel
Tarter, 6-3, 6-1. Linda Morter won
a see-saw battle with Dani Hayden.

match, showing an improved
backhand but lost to Sara Nelson,
4-8.

8-5.
Once again, the boys experienced
frustration in singles play as they lost
all three matches. Brent Sheirbon fell
to Javier Ingles 6-4, 0-6, 1-6, Eric
Orem lost to Jayme Cordova, 1-8,
and Jason Schneider was defeated by
Gary Neutstel, 2-8. However, the
doubles team of Brent Sheirbon and
Eric Orem made some amends by
defeating John Thomas and Doug
Surber, 8-5.
The Cards finished their marathon
week by traveling to Condon on
Saturday. Renee Van Leersum con
tinued on her winning ways by
knocking off Shandie Johnson, 6-2,
6-3. Coach Cathy McCabe liked
what she saw in that match and states
that the harder Renee's competition
plays, the better Renee plays. Linda
Morter got way down but fought
back into contention in her match
with Jennifer Byrd only to lose, 6-8.
Fumika Matsui also ended up on the
short end of the score, falling to
Junko Yamanaka, 1-8.
In doubles' play. Amy Wagenblast
and Nancy Morter produced a 6-2,’ ,p
6-2 win over Maridy Smith and Cin
dy Erickson. Kristine Bedortha and
Amy Pointer lost a close one to
Christy Nation and Nichole Wilson,
8-9. This close match saw Kristine
playing very well at the net and Amy
coming through with some great
back court hits.
In boy’s action, Brent Sheirbon
fell behind and couldn’t quite make
up the difference, losing to Marcela
Fontoni, 6-4, 1-6, 3-6. Eric Orem
lost to Joe Claughton, 5-8.
The Cardinals now head to the
district tennis meet to be held this
Friday and Saturday in the
