The lone tracksters had two meets
last week, traveling to Wahtonka for
a five-way meet on Tuesday and
visiting Condon on Saturday tor the
Condon Invitational. The Cardinals
continued to improve, producing
several personal and season bests as
well as one district best.
The lone girls ran to a second-
place finish and the boys tied for se
cond in a five-way meet held in The
Dalles on April 5. Competing
against Wahtonka. Sherman Coun
ty, Wasco County and Dufur, the
girls scored 53 points behind
Wahtonka's 104 and the boys scored
40 to tie with Sherman County'.
Wahtonka also won the boys portion
of the meet with 139 points.
The girls had two double winners,
with Danielle Stefani winning the
1500 meters in 5:37 and the 3000
meters in 12:32.5 and Jo Cupps tak
ing the discus and javelin with
throws of 96'2'/i" and 110’4
respectively. Cupps also placed se
cond in the shot put with a toss of
30' 1 Vi” to complete a 1-2 Cardinal
sweep. lone’s Wendy Anderson won
the event, throwing 30' 7 l/ t ' \ Roun
ding out the scoring. Crystal Minster
took fourth in the 200 (29.65) and
fifth in both the long jump (12'6” )
and 100 (14.51). Janie Cupps took
third in the high jump with a jump
of 4 '4 ” and fourth in the 100 meter
high hurdles with a time of 21.88.
She also took fourth in the 300 in
termediate hurdles in a time of
60.53. The Cardinal relay team,
consisting of Jo Cupps, Janie Cupps,
Cyrstal M inster and Danielle
Stefani. took fourth place, running
the distance in 59.42.
Gabe Garcia ran a district-best
53.48 in the 400 meters to spark the
boys effort and win that event. He
also finished second in the 200
(24.85), third in the high jump <5’2’)
and fourth in the longjump(16’l ” ).
Mike Garrett, the only other first-
place finisher, won the triple jump
with a leap of 36'3” . He also took
third place in both the 1500 (4.50.8)
and javelin (1 17'5” ) as well as plac
ing fourth in the 3000 (10:59.2).
Mark Anderson wrapped up second
place in the discus (88’7” ), third in
the shot put (33’4 ” ) and fifth in the
200 (28.15). Mike Lovgren round
ed out the scoring, finishing fifth in
the shot put with a throw of 29’2” .
Coach Del l uRue said he felt good
about the Cardinals’ efforts against
the larger schools. "W e had some
gixxl efforts. Wendy Anderson had
a PR (personal record) in the shot put
and Gabe Garcia established a
district best in the 400.” He also
praised Danielle Stefani for her un
challenged victory in the 3000, her
first try at that distance.
The competition at the Condon In
vitational was considerably stiffer
with 24 schools in attendance. “ We
didn’t fare as well on Saturday,”
says LaRue. Besides the competi
tion, several of the lone athletes
were bothered by the high pollen
count brought on by the warm
weather.
On the girls side, Jo Cupps won
the javelin with a throw of 116' 11 ” .
She also took third in the discus with
a toss of 95'0” , her best effort so far
this season. Danielle Stefani. battl
ing asthma, managed a fifth-place
finish in the 1500 with a time of
5:39.6.
For the boys, Gabe Garcia placed
fourth in the 400 with a time of
54.29 and Mike Garrett ran to a fifth
place finish in the 1500 with a time
of 4:42.4.
Several Cardinals set personal
records but didn’t manage to place
in the top six. Mike Garrett threw
130’5” in the javelin, Mark Ander
son tossed the javelin 129” 7” and
Gabe Garcia sprinted to a time of
24.06 in the 200. LaRue says the
team competed well but were unable
to score many points.
