Heideman named Class À/B East
team all-star coach
By Anne Morter
Dana Heideman, coach of the state
basketball champions, lone Car
dinals, was recently named head
coach of the Class A/B All-Star East
team. Heideman will be assisted by
Dale Wagner, coach of the 1990
Class A girls basketball champion,
Imbler Panthers, in two games to be
held June 23 and 24 at Linfield Col
lege in McMinnville and Chemeketa
Community College in Salem.
Cardinal All-Stater, Jo Cupps was
named to play on the team and Lin
da Morter was picked as an alter
nate. The final roster will be set
sometime after April 24 when the
girls that have been selected indicate
whether they can play or not.
The All-Star team, now in its
eighth year, is composed of the best
senior players from the Class A and
B ranks. The squad will practice in
lone from June 18-21 before travel
ing to McMinnville and Salem to
take on the West team in two games.
The Class AAA and AA girls all
stars will play their games at the
same time and places.
Heideman and Wagner were pick
ed as coaches on the basis of their
current season win-loss record. The
head coach position alternates from
year to year between the Class A and
Class B coach. As luck would have
it, this is a Class B year making
Heideman the head coach and the
host of the team.
Heideman is excited at the pro
spect of coaching such an elite
group. Three of the girls are six feet
tall or taller. The pressure is on
however. The East team has
dominated the series for the last three
years, a tradition Heideman would
like to continue.
The team roster is as follows:
Dani baker. North Douglas; Julie
Turner, LaPine; Dawn Shepherd,
Weston-McEwen; Janene Webster,
Imbler; Melinda Miller, Sherman
County; Ivie Gill, Mt. Vernon;
Kathy Nelson, Im bler; Kari
Gregory, Grant Union; Marlisse
Haggerty, Lost River; Cheryl
Thomas, North Douglas, Julie
Newston, Helix and Jo Cupps, lone.
Alternates are: Kathy Miller,
Union; Janet Sazek, Yoncalla;
Lahna Haglund, Chiloquin; Sheri
Murphy, Wahtonka and Linda
Morter, lone.

RHS boys take four
way track meet
By Marty Suter
Riverside track and field are back
ed by a strong junior and freshmen
class. There are 36 athletes that are
out. Returners are expected to lead
in their events.
“ We only have two seniors out
this year, John Shorts and Tonie
Heiple,” said coach Donna Barton.
Riverside’s first meet was April 3
at Umatilla’s four-way meet. The
boys ran away with the victory tak
ing 11 first-place finishes and scor
ing 161 points. The closest team to
Riverside was lone with 54.

The Riverside Pirates began their
baseball season on die right foot with
a 4-0 record. With only four days of
practice, due to the state basketball
tournament playoffs, the Pirates met
up with AA Baker High School on
March 23 in a double header and
took both games.
In the opener, the Bulldogs mat
ched up well against the Pirates, but
couldn't hold off the mighty Pirates
who won, 10-8. In the bottom of the
seventh inning the Pirates were
down by one, but Matt Andreason

With their 2-0 record the Pirates
then traveled to Pendleton on March
27 to play the Bucks' junior varsity
team. Riverside won the opener. 5-1
behind the pitching of Billy Byrd and
Mike Tallman. In the nightcap,
which ended in five innings on the
account of darkness, the Pirates beat

Pirates take first loss o f season
By Mikka Evans
The Riverside Pirates took their
first loss this season against AA
Mac-Hi. The Pirates fell short to the
Pioneers last Tuesday at home, 1-3.
Errors were a key-factor in the
Pirates last pre-season game. Matt
Andreason and Billy Byrd were on
the mound for Riverside.
On Saturday the Pirates met their
rival, the Umatilla Vikings, and
“ showed them what baseball really
is." The Pirates won both games of
the double header. 17-2 and 17-1.
Riverside was very strong at the
plant, using their experience and the
Vikings errors to their advantage.
Mike Tallman connected for two
homeruns in the first game and one
in the second game. Teammate Ryan
Evans also hit a homerun in the first
game.
Pitching for the Pirates was Scott
Timms in the first game. In the se
cond game Matt Andreason lead the
Pirates at the mound.
