Support Brownfield for BMCC director
To i ho F.ditor:
This loiter is ssrilton in support of
Nancy Brownfield, the incumbent,
who is running for Position No. I on
the Blue Mountain Community Col
lege Board of Directors. Nancy is
completing her fourth year on the
hoard. This lust year she has been
the chairman of hoard of directors.
Nancy Brownfield is the best can
didate for this position. Her interest
and enthusiasm in serving on the
hoard is matched only by the impact
she has had in helping the direction
and philosophy of Blue Mountain
Community College.
Another important factor in sup
port of Nancy’s candidacy is the fact
that she represents a constituency
that contributes 37 percent of the tax
dollars used to operate the college.
She is the only representation Mor
row County has on the board with
other members on the board being
from Pendleton. Milton-Freewater.
Helix and Hermiston: all Umatilla
county locations.
The Heppner Chamber of Com
merce feels that the interests of all
Blue Mountain Community Col
lege’s patrons will be well served by
supporting Nancy Brownfield tor
position No. I .
Please join us in supporting Nan
cy’s candidacy when you receive
your mail in ballot
Sincerely,
(s) Cliff Green

I strongly support the incumbent
Alan Holmes of Bcfardman who has
demonstrated his dedication, energy
and committment to provide the best
education for our children. Alan has
the experience, integrity and has
devoted the needed time to give to
this responsibility. He previously
served onthe Boardman-Irrigon Ad
visory Committee, and as a school
board member has attended advisory'
meetings in Boardman and Irrigon
and lone and Heppner.
As a board member. Alan was ap
pointed to the transportation commit

Prejudice
Why is it that on St. Patrick’s Day
most of us try to find some Irish blood
somewhere in the family tree? Why js
it that on St. Patrick's day everyone is
a little bit Irish?
I don’t know of a day when everyone
is a little bit black, nor a time when
everyone wants to be a little Hispanic.
Most of us simply do not identify with
those cultures, yet nearly all of us are
foreigners or descendants of foreigners
from one place or another.
The only exceptions are American
Indians and I don’t know of a day when
we’re a little bit Indian either.
By Ed Glenn
It might be skin color. But then I’ve
____________
_
known some pretty dark Italians and a
lot of my friends claim to be Italian lovers. And I’ve known some very
fair skinned Scandinavians, and I seea lot of tall Norwegian blondes. Many
Hispanics have the very fair skin of their Spanish ancestors, so maybe skin
color alone does not explain the difference between some cultural groups
and others.
I think it has a lot to do with the adoption of the American culture. Just
what the American culture is is hard to say. It s kind of a mix of a lot
of other cultures, yet not the same as any of them.
The American culture includes dress Generally it’s pretty much a con
servative, standard, ‘‘what everyone else is wearing,” sort of thing. But
we do tolerate some low cut evening gowns, some skimpy bathing suits
and Spandex. People who dress radically different than most of us
sometimes are the victim of our prejudice.
But most of all, our culture includes language. We say we speak English,
but a native Englishman cringes at the thought. I’m like Snuffy Smith who
says we talk “ New Ninted States." We can tolerate only a little accent
of a different language and beyond that, a heavy accent or the inability
to speak (and write) standard English, evokes our prejudice.
Many immigrant groups have overcome our prejudice by learning to
speak the usually accepted standard English. When they do not, or even
individuals do not, somehow we want to avoid them, not associate with
them, even "h ate” them.
The Irish have set the example for all other peoples of all other cultures.
Over the generations they have maintained a bit of their native culture.
They have maintained their old world identity. Family identities and
histories have remained intact. They know who they are. Yet, there is very
little racial or cultural prejudice against the Irish. I think it is because Irigh
men and women speak and write standard American English (except on
St. Patrick’s day when we all have an Irish brogue.)
I think if other folks were to follow the Irish lead. Hispanics, blacks,
Asians as well as Europeans, we’d have much less racial prejudice in this
country. It seems that we arc all interested’in that great rugged individual,
but we can’t stand him to be too different from us. A little bit of difference
is charming but a great difference like a language, evokes our hatred.
Maybe too, we’ve placed too much emphasis on sameness. Maybe we
could tolerate a little larger degree of difference from us. If we were a
bit more tolerant, maybe we could have a good time celebrating a Saint
from another country or culture.
*
Imagine what it would be like celebrating St. Patrick’s day in March
and then some other ethnic holiday in April and May and June and so on.
And maybe all that will take is a little more standard English and a little
more tolerance. A little bit of give on both sides.
